to each and every one of you, my hat is off... you all sacrificed for freedom... something that i never was fortunate enough to be able to do... i am now faced with raising 3 children, 2 boys and a girl on the way... and the best i can to is to teach them to respect those that serve, and to strive to become someone that serves... for serving ones country, and facing the possibility of dying for your country is truly gods highest calling...

Thank you all

I don't even know why I'm posting here. Maybe it's the wine.

I served, but I don't talk about it. Calling what I did "service" is downright embarassing.

Short story: All I did was a short time circa 1980, during peacetime. I got out early on a breech of contract clause. My ex-husband (great guy, btw - I have only good things to say about him) and I joined together on the "buddy plan", when we were but mere kids, and in our 2nd 18 month cycle they could find a place for both of us, but ultimately not together. So I got out and followed him as an "army wife", working civilian jobs on the posts.

Compared to many, many military people I've known both past and present, I am not even a pimple on their collective behinds in terms of service.

For everyone here who has gone the extra mile, you have my utmost respect and gratitude, and that's coming from the bottom of my well-entwined heart.

I was there for 6months in '83 with 8thEngrs building tank ditches, M198 bunkers, and basically resurrecting "Camp Buckley" from the mothballs. Were you with the leeward gang or following up the 6month rotations?

Very true... It just really sucks going from a great infantry company to a pog company because they need the slots filled for the new company... With that said nothing against those that aren't/weren't infantry, I just really liked my job and was good at it :D

Well, as much as I whine, I was excellent at my job. I could get a 120mm mortar into action faster than anyone I ever went up against and consistently put steel-on-steel in record time :)

The Cav Scouts loved us when we were doing our job and were always very impressed with our speed and accuracy.

I've heard tale of people with mortars (registered as Destructive Devices). I wonder if anyone on this forum has one. I'd especially love to get to play with the 60mm mortar again. That thing was fun (mostly because it was close range and you could see the effects)

I was there (Omaha) from early '63 - late '65. I remember some horribly hot summers, terrible snowfall and cold winters (weeks when it seldom got above zero F), and the smell of the stock yards (now closed, I understand.) I also remember shoveling runway lights to keep the SAC airborne command post running on time.

Lived off base for a while, in Plattsmouth and Omaha.

Last of the Molders (Foundryman) while I served there were less than 180 Molders Navy wide. I left the service after Mr Clinton minimized the Armed Forces and phased out my rate. They gave me the choice of changing rate to Master at Arms or going to Recruiting. I had no interest in either.

Never got into the military. USAF, '59-63, ground radio repairman.

High point was 4 1/2mo. of TDY to Camp Mercury, NV, for 23 underground A bomb tests, followed by another 4 1/2 mo. to Christmas Island, on the equator directly south of Hawaii, for 22 air drop tests. (Glowed so bright afterwards we didn't need a night light for a few years.) Missed seeing my #1 daugher learn to walk, she had just turned 1 when I left, got home in time for her second birthday and she was walking quite well. For a girl. ;)
