I searched the forum, couldn't find what I was looking for. Apologizes in advance if I didn't see a previous thread where there was asked.

Where can I go, other than a shooting range, to shoot?

I'd like to do some translation drills with multiple targets, practice drawing from the holster, and shooting on the move. My local ranges allow none of that.

Can I find a "middle of nowhere" piece of land that has a berm?

    What are the local laws?

    Thanks in advance.

If you can find "middle of nowhere" land where you are legally allowed to be, then generally, yes, you can shoot on it.

    However ...

There isn't any "unowned" land or BLM land east of the Mississippi. So if you've seen/heard of people in AZ or NV driving out into the middle of the desert and having a fun day of shooting, that's almost always BLM land. So that's not a thing here in NC.

In the past, target shooting on state game lands was allowed unless prohibited, but many of them have instituted restrictions to combat property destruction and littering. Holly Shelter Game Lands, for instance, recently banned target shooting for these reasons.

If you do happen to make friends with a farmer or a landowner who has a big bunch of land and will let you go out there and shoot on it, then you're probably in the clear. Generally there will be a county-level statute that requires that you be a certain distance from occupied dwellings before discharging a firearm, and there may be requirements that you ensure projectiles don't leave your property, and noise ordinances that will be largely moot if you are sufficiently far away from other houses. You'll just have to do your homework based on the county you're going to be in.

You will most likely need to buy some land, find a friend, or join a club.

    Please do.

Which gun groups do you follow on FB?
I came across IWT in Richlands. But from what I gathered (and I could be wrong) they only hold 3-gun competitions at their range.

You could rent Frying Pan Tower and shoot off the top. Just don't shoot the building.

I'm just on a couple that use the "Don't post a price" method of selling firearms, but one is "Eastern NC Hunting" and the other is "Onslow Weapons Enthusiasts" or something like that.

GO here and look up the ordinances for your area. Obey them. Print them out. Provide copies to your neighbors and visitors with badges. Bid them all farewell and gtfo your property.

Reality is these range clubs need to promote a higher level of ability for the members.

To be afraid of liability due to injury, the only way to avoid it is by first training, then practice.

I would tell you if you are a member of a club to get the range rules changed. Between now and then go shoot pistol action sport matches.

Get involved in the action shooting sports as it'll help with skill development. It's a great way to support whatever drills you're doing on your own.

USPSA. Find a local club and sign up, show up and shoot the matches.

It will be every thing you are looking for plus more
