So I just picked up one of these. Pretty ain't it. I'll be shooting some IDPA matches with it. While it is in fact, a tool, I love wood grips on these and like keeping an old school look, but I really need to reach the mag release better. I can search the web as good as anybody, but figured I'd put it out there to discuss.

@ForumSurfer - who is that maker you buy from? The woman that makes those exotics?

She is the one, and WOW, it looks like she has amped up her game since last I looked.
Sadly, I don't see any that have a thumb cutaway.

If you are open to other grips besides wood, I know a guy that has a set of VZ g10 grips with the super scoop posted here in the classifieds.;)

I can't believe this is happening. It just came to me. Take off perfectly good parts from the gun, and alter them irreparably with ordinary wood shop tools . My old man bought a crap load of guns, for no reason, other than he could, when he was my age, screwed with all of them, except the Colt 1911, and then died three years later. Several of you have some of those, lol.

I guess I'll do what he would do, in his memory. Take those grips off and take a file to them and get them like I want, then break out the Tru Oil.

If the grips actually say Range Officer on them, you do the world a favor butchering them.
Hope the function turns out right.

Okay. Looks like VZ makes some nice looking double diamond rosewood grips that can be ordered with beveled bottom and a thumb notch. Y'all are slipping. I had to do this myself.

I probably need to decide first if I'm going to put a magwell on this thing. I keep telling myself I won't, but I haven't even shot it yet. Much less, run it in a match. The Springer RO does have a beveled magwell, which is an improvement.

Thats a great looking SA. I miss mine. Ill own another soon. I ran VZ operator II's on all my 1911's. Those wood grips that have the burl in them make me warm and fuzzy tho.

As much as I wanted stainless, and bought it, the media blasted parts of the slide and frame really eat up the kydex in the holster and put all kinds of skid marks on the pistol. It comes off with bore solvent though. I just couldn't warm up to their parkerized finish, having just sold a blued Colt.

I'm going to weigh in that I HATE my vz grips. I mean really, they suck. They work, but I hate them. I hate the feel, I hate the look. I'd sell them or trade them to you but honestly I'm likely going to sell the entire gun.

I've only handled one pistol with VZ grips and I didn't warm up to them either. I found some cocobola double diamond traditional 1911 grips WITH thumb notch for $55 that I was looking for and they are ordered.

Would the slim grips help you reach the button? Altamont makes some nice grips but don't have the cut out you're looking for.

I agree with @ForumSurfer on his hatred for the VZ grips or any grip made out of that laminated plastic crap.

I'm putting a Smith and Alexander Mag Guide (mag well, like a Springfield TRP) on it and I ordered the one for regular grips. I have a good sized hand but I'm used to shooting polymer pistols in matches that don't require quite the same hand gyrations required to do quick reloads with a 1911, so I ordered the thumb notched grip panels.

I just prefer wood. I like the way it feels in my hand. You can get aggressive checkering in wood.

Plus, there is just something oh so right about hand cut rips with checkering done by hand. It is basically master-craftsman art that is functional. Then just accumulate some wear and knicks for character.

This is what I ordered from Fusion Firearms. VZ had some too, but they were maybe $30 more.
These are cut to fit flush with a mag well, so no cut out at the bottom for the mainspring housing pin.

Never found any wood that is even close enough to being as grippy as I like for a match gun. Or if they were they didn't remain that way for long. Different strokes I guess.

I prefer the LOK Bogies. I also use grip tape on front strap if there is no checkering there.
