So I'm looking to start getting into precision shooting. I'm looking for something just for the range, as I'm not a hunter. I've looked at the savage 10 and Remington 700 although I am not married to either. What are your thoughts, are there other rifles I should consider? Would these be a good platform to start with? I would like to spend less than 1k on the rifle itself.

What about the Ruger Precision gen II.

    Thats where I'd start looking.

    Stay away from any Savage.

I was a huge fan of Savage Arms.

Out side of a Rem700 look at Howa.

I have this and its a great rifle. I had the action beaded and lead added to the stock. with my vortex diamondback hp and hornady match, i was blowing the same hole 3 times at 100 yards

Take a look at Tikka as well. Mine shoots better than I do. I have the CTR in .308.

I'm also curious about this. The trend seems to be moving towards savage and away from rem 700's do to lack of QC.

Im sure JB has more info - just judging from what I see others recommend.

Savage and Rem both suck as factory rifles for the most part.

Of the two designs the Rem700 has less failures per year then my Savage 10FLP did.

Tikka with the 60deg bolt lift is a big deal, Howa's quality is a big deal

I run a 700 I built now, I have owned 3 savages and sold all of them due to the extractor.

I know you said you were trying to keep it under a grand, but I am saving up for one of these right now for a little bit over. I think it will be well worth it.
