The vast majority of Americans have not grabbed onto the need to be prepared at home and at work for potential disasters. One of the harshest lessons learned from recent disasters, especially Katrina, is that you are your own first responder.

In this new normal, we have only two options: We can exist in fear and dependency, or we can do the responsible thing and live comfortably in a culture of preparedness

LTG Russel Honore, US Army (retired)

I hope more people like you will speak up and help make people have a wake up cal. Thank you for your service and dedication to help spreading the word of "preparedness".

Many people still look at you like you are some freak or "crazy" person if you try and talk to them about being prepared or "prepping" for such possible events. I grew up in the country with grandparents and great grandparents that "prepping" was not a fad but a way of life. They grew many of their own foods, canned, heated and cooked by wood, smoked meat, etc. They could survive without ant help from anyone if need be.

It is sad that now people think you are crazy or some nut job. The sad part is people have become dependent on the government so much for everyday living. I am not just talking food stamps and other like programs. I am talking about the ones that depend on the system for every emergency that happen no matter how big or small.

Keep spreading the word!!

I've been saying for a while now and it relates to the current argument anti's are using...

If we are supposed to be able to depend on professional services, police, fire, medical to protect us and keep us safe, why does DHS sponsor CERT training? CERT training supposes that professional help may not be available for days. Why do we have ready.gov and why did the CDC adopt a Zombie theme for preparedness? Because, we need to be able to rely on ourselves as professional services WILL be overwhelmed.

Honore is a straight talker. I don't know his entire history, but many of his actions during Katrina gained him support amongst the survivors. At one point, he stopped a truck load of National Guard and ordered them to stop pointing their weapons at the civilians. He made it clear that they were there to help, not occupy.

He also had little patience for MSM, often telling them that they were "stuck on stupid" when they were trying to fix blame instead of reporting helpful information to the people.

Sorry I came late to the party folks. I have a lot of catching up to do. Your advice has not fallen on deaf ears. I think my sister and brother in law are just getting started. I have no idea why, but I feel like something very big and very bad is looming. Hoping I am dead wrong.
