For the average user (home defense, truck gun, camp gun), do you see any advantage to the 590A1 over a 500 or a Remington 870? Or, is the appeal mostly cool factor. I've been thinking about getting a 590A1, but am curious what others think about them, especially those who own/have owned them.

Thanks in advance!

I've had one as an HD weapon for some time now. Absolutely love the weight (heavier than a 500, about the same as an 870) and the tang-mounted safety.

FWIW...I've done a 2-day, 1500 round class with mine. Completely reliable with no hiccups at all.

That says a lot. It will take me quite a while to put 1500 rounds through one, short of going through a course. :) What model did you get?

Thanks!

I have a 590A1 Mariner and love this thing. I added some wood furniture and the shorter stock and added weight made the gun handle a lot better for me. It is amazingly accurate at HD distances, especially for a novice like me, and have only had issues with some cheap Walmart Winchester 7.5 ammo jamming on extraction, but have put over a hundred rounds of shells through it, mainly RIO 00 buck, both low recoil and standard.

No real reason to pick it over an 870, or an 870 over it. Just get whichever has the more intuitive safety/release location to you. You really can't go wrong.

I like 870's. Mostly for the layout of the controls, but I also think they look better.
Can't argue with faces like these :D

One thing I like about the 590A1 is the metal trigger guard. Which, depending on who you ask, is or isn't necessary. I figure metal is better than plastic in this case. Also, some come with a bayonet lug and you can upgrade to a Black Aces receiver which will accept Saiga mags:)

I have a 590A1. it has a speedfeed stock and a surefire foregrip on it. The surefire required removal of the bayonet lug, but really, was I going to use it? Thing has run like a champ no matter what I've thrown at it. I much prefer the safety method on it.

Can't go wrong with any of the pumps you described for the intended purpose. In reality none are better than the others.

Oh Man...1500 round 2 day self defense class with a 590??? I've shot more shotguns shells than probably anyone on this forum other than "baileyboat," and would never sign up for such a thing...

Chicken. :D

For full disclosure, tho, most was birdshot. Only ~150 rnds of 00B and ~100 slugs, IIRC.
