I feel that women should carry concealed BUT....the firearm should be secured to their body by a belt just like men that CCW...my reasoning....I took a call the other day where a female was walking out of a local store pushing her buggie. This not so inteligent individual had her purse sitting in the part that you would normally seat a child. As she walked to her vehicle two teenaged males rode by her on bicycles and one snatched the purse right out from in front of her. The first thing she told me was that the purse was made for CCW and it had a special zippered compartment for a weapon. "Maybe they will not find the gun in the bag" she said. Sure enough...we found the bag...the only things missing...the cash and the gun!!

the trick is, in PA, the courts have repeatedly ruled that open carry is protected by state law.

she is 100% legal to open carry just about anywhere she wishes to do so.

the real case to watch will be the state of PA Vs. John noble. he is on trial for disorderly conduct for open carrying too close to an obama rally back in september... he was not inside the secure area. the claim is that because cops had to confront him, that made him disorderly...

i suspect that the PA courts will follow precedent and he will not be convicted

I disagree. Men aren't restricted to on the person carrying. I know a couple of people that carry in backpacks or in a man bag, or in a briefcase.
I do think that women who carry in their purses, should be 100% responsible for said purse at all times. That purse should not be able to be stolen from you or lost or entered by anyone other than the owner.
I tell my wife all the time to close her purse.

I agree, this lady should not be singled out because some of the soccer mom's freaked out. As long as 1. She was properly licensed (which the article says she was) and 2. She is responsible for her hand gun, exhibits no irresponsible handling such as playing with it or such and 3. Is not carrying in a prohibited place.(which the article says she was not.) She is within her rights, I hope she wins!!

And I also agree with carrying on your body. I don't think it should be mandated but I do think that gun shops, trainers should encourage a woman to carry on their body. I know I had looked at concealed carry purses. I just don't feel comfortable with the idea of my gun hanging in a bag with a strap that someone can grab and run. As soon as my license come in and I start to carry, mine will be on my person. It should be a personal choice, but one should make an educated decision about it.

yes yes, how dare someone exercise their rights in public... why that might make someone else realize that they can too... whats next? dogs and cats living together?

the whole common sense argument is a load of hogwash... and is a HUGE part of the reason that we gunnies have so many laws against us now...

remember, ammo serialization, mag cap limits, one gun a month, assault weapons bans, .50 cal bans, gun registration, gun free zones, gun "buybacks", closing the NFA registry... those are all "common sense" regulations too...

my favorite bit of common sense, which at least 5 out of 9 judges can read correctly goes something like this:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

I believe that the woman has a right to carry . If the county does not want people to carry at soccer games then they need to pass an ordinance against carrying on county property. There is one here in Person county.
they cant... the PA constitution preempts local law and open carry is specifically protected under PA law.

if the county wants to get this changed, they need to get the state law changed.

And women always look at me confused when I tell them carry in the purse isn't a great idea. I've had my purse snatched many moons ago. My guns stay IWB. If mine has to go in my bag for some reason, it goes in my backpack that gets secured across my chest. They can't grab it without dragging me, and the average thug won't be dragging my big behind very far!

USMCSKI,

First I want to say that I certainly respect the job you do and the hardships a case like this could cause. I think putting blame on this lady for having her purse snatched is a little unfair. It's kind of like blaming someone for having their car stolen because they parked too far away in a parking lot. I agree that all people who carry need to excercise diligence with weapon retention, but as we have seen even the Secret Service lets some one get a shoe(or two) off sometimes.

I guess what I am trying to say is don't bame the victim, blame the criminals. Statements that she was negligent only give opponents of our rights more ammunition. I know that was not your intention, but things get taken out of context every day. Anyway just my $.02.

+1. Most guys tend to wear pants and a belt. For some women, their attire may not really permit them to carry a firearm on their person, hence the purse.

I , by no means, am blaming the victim for being victimized......I am however blaming her for having no common sense.
I dont take my weapon off and lay it in the baby seat portion of the buggie...do you?

You mentioned it yourself...weapons retention!! Its the big issue here...How hard would it have been for the thugs to take the weapon if it was attached to her body?...no where near as easy as it lying in the CCW bag in the buggie.

Now WE ALL have to deal with another gun in the wrong hands!

To clear this up...she was wearing blue jeans, a "t" shirt and a leather jacket and could easily have carried something secured on her body.

CCW instructors...feel free to use this as an example in your classes.

Check MY sig line.

That woman in the purse-snatching story absolutely is to blame for failing to secure her effects and opening herself up to a crime of opportunity. She would not have been a "victim" of Robbery if she hadn't been an idiot. She was picked for a reason, and that reason is the sum of everything SHE did to make herself the most attractive prey in that parking lot that day.

"No one disputes Hain's right to own a gun. Many of her critics are hunters. But they say that packing heat at a soccer game - or anywhere else around children - is dangerous and foolhardy."

dangerous to have around children?? what?? I believe in her right to carry but she should use some discretion and carry concealed. no need to bring allot of attention.

Even Judge Robert J. Eby . . . said he didn't think anyone needed gun protection at a 5-year-old's soccer game.
. . . said the naive man before he was robbed at a soccer game.

I've had people tell me "Oh no, you should never open carry. It causes too much panic." But if more people would do it, others would not think "Oh there's a scary person with a gun." They'd think "Oh, there's a person."

A poll with the article:
Should people be allowed to carry guns around children?
Yes 6172 (72.4%)
No 2354 (27.6%)
Of course! If I have kids around me, nobody will want to harm me or them. It's so simple now. How could I have been so blind before? Good thing there's kids almost everywhere in the city. That's why the crime rate is so low. Only groups of old people get robbed. Wait, is that why grandparents always want to visit their grandkids--for protection?
