Depends. when it quits cleaning in a reasonable time out it goes.
The media doesn't wear out it just gets full of gunk and loses its abrasive ability.
I have tried washing old media. It worked somewhat but was not worth the trouble.

the dryer sheet trick will work some, you get out a dirty dryer sheet but in a couple of months of test use I didn't see any improvement of media life.

I have been mixing one box of corn cob and then filling the cleaner with walnut. is working well

I have some powder form brass polish from Champions brand in Mount Holly NC. I am going to try it this week with only walnut. will report back on how it works.

I use a tumbler and fill it with one part walnut and two parts corn. I use Flitz media additive liquid to condition new media and then I add a cap full every two or three times to keep it working. I also cut a dryer sheet into strips and add that with the brass. That said, my media lasts six months or more, depending on how much I use it. I load .38 Special, 9mm, .357 mag., .40 S&W, .44 mag., and .45 ACP, .22-250, .223, and .30-06. I load (and clean) about 1,500 pieces of brass each month and like all of my brass to shine.

As an alternative to the liquid additive, I have used the powdered enhancer made by Champion Products and was very satisfied with it's performance.

I hope that helps,

Frank

media

Nu-Finish and dryer sheets and add a bit more media once in a while with corncob. It seems to last a lOOOOOOOng time!!! I can't remember when I ever just threw out a batch of media.

media

I read a post on the Dillon forum and they say that walnut should last 10,000 rounds and corncob should last 18,000 rounds. Mine never lasts that long.

BTW the compound from champions choice works very well. I have a crap load of it.

I don't know if you heard, but the guy that owned Champions Choice has died. The last time I checked they seem to have shut down the business. I'm not sure if you can get any more of it.

Frank you are correct. Gil was a friend of mine and the company is no longer in business. Most of his remaining inventory went to friends and sold to settle is estate.

I probably do things a little differently than some, since I only load 30 cal or larger bottle neck cases and straight wall pistol cases media size isn't a concern to me.

I use the cob pet bedding at Wally World and NuFinish,I bought two bags of the stuff over a year ago and I have ran a lot of brass, including fifty year old surplus brass, range pickup brass and surplus pull bullets through it and have been very happy with the results, when the brass and bullets come out looking new there isn't much to complain about.

I just finished up the first bag of media so I have one to go,at $4.25 a bag i feel i get my monies worth, when it starts to turn a dark gray or greenish look form powder residue or the old tarnish off the brass and take longer than a couple hours to do the job its time to throw it out. I do once in awhile get a few cases where it's packed in but a couple taps agents another case or a poke with a old dental pick gets it right out with no hassle. It's not for anything in the 22 cal. range so don't buy it if your going to be working with bottle neck cases that small.

1911 sorry to hear about Gil I wondered what had happened ,I'm sure he was a wonderful person and is greatly missed. His business and products were second to none which reflected on the kind of person he was.

I got one of the first tumblers on the market, Lyman 1200, many years ago. Hve never "worn out" any media so I don't know the answer, It lasts much longer than many seem to think tho.

I HAVE replaced a bowl load of media a few times, just to esperiment with different types and with different polishes. I lucked onto some cob air blastng media (for cleaning log homes) that's much finer than the "normal" tumbling stuff, it's about as fine as beach sand. It pours out of the cases nicely and doesn't often clog flash holes!

You didn't ask this, but I really find no effective difference between cob and nut, nor with any specific brand of polish. I use the least expensive I can find of each, don't much care what it is labeled. Use the cheapest amonia free auto polish I can find, Nu-Finish is good but so are others. Seems some folk agonize far to much over what's the "best" media and polish, and how long to run the tumbler.

Use what ever you have and run the machine till the job is done!

You mean Champion's Choice as in the Bore Cleaner was out of Mt. Holly? I have used their product for more years than I care to remember and if it's one and the same I am VERY sorry to hear that. I still have a bottle somewhere and it was the BEST bore cleaner I think I had ever used. Better than Hoppies and Sweets...

Wish the family would have kept the business going or sold the rights off to someone like Brownells. I am always sad to see when someone in the industry passes away, we need to keep the people, family and products going for strength in the industry.

So I hear people use Nu-Finish I guess we get that in the auto parts store ? What form, I guess the wax type paste ? Any other options out there that are good if I can't find Nu-Finish. I am headed out in a couple of hours to Wallmart to find corn or walnut media, I need to get working on my ancient brass. Oh...the wife is dressed and ready to head out, guess I'll be buying sooner than I thought.

SCRich you can find the NuFinish about anywhere you get auto products I got mine at Wally world orange bottle in liquid form I use about three cap fulls to one batch of cob media and I never had to add anymore till I throw the media out.

I mix the media and polish together well first in an old bucket with a big plastic spoon and then dump it in the tumbler.

Thanks I got a bottle today, Wallmart had squat in the pet department so I ended up buying a bag of rice and it worked OK. I think rice would do OK for somewhat clean brass but I had some 7year old brass that was stored in metal garage in FL and it looked really poor and smelled funky.

I am headed for petsmart tomorrow and hopefully they will have the corn cob in stock in Rock Hill. I got several hundred pounds of brass to bring up to snuff. I am going to seal them all in vaccum bags prior to storing them this time.

So no plans to sell the Champion's Choice product to someone else to continue the legacy?
