Pardon my ignorance, but I am looking at getting into radios. I don't have the time right now to get in Ham radio, but would like to in the future.

What is my best options for 2 way communication without a licence? I had some FRS radios as a kid, so I'm looking for something better than that. Also, what is a reasonable distance they would work in the Piedmont of NC? Thanks in advance.

There really aren't many reliable options better than FRS to the non-ham. CB is the wild west and getting further than a few miles is hard unless conditions are good even if you can cut through the hookers and retards. I put it off for a long time, but if you are not an idiot you can pass your tech exam with about 3 nights studying for about an hour each night after reading the study guide. Once you are a tech, you can use a $30 Chinese radio to use local repeaters to talk as far as a few hundred miles. I recently talked to @htperry from almost the VA line to his house in Charlotte, sounded like he was right beside me (we used the HEARS repeater network which stretches hundreds of miles). My local repeater is about 20 miles from me and I can talk to about anyone in a 60-75 mile diameter circle to that tower on the same cheap radio with a 10" antenna. Radio to radio I have tested even in the mountains to 4 miles + and did not find the outer limit of reliability (talking $30 Baofeng radios here with 10" antennas). Mobile ham from a car or set up to be portable with a good antenna and 25-50W can get you further. 2M and 440 are very useful and reliable.

Look, I know you want what you want but it is a unicorn.

The only other option is actually not legal, but most of the Chinese radios will do FRS/MURS/Marine and GMRS at the full 5W instead of the tiny wattage of the actual FRS radios. You could be real careful and use them on these freqs but it is technically against the law as they are not type accepted.

Spend the TINY amount of time it takes to get your tech ticket and I guarantee you won't regret it.

Scott, I spent about $150 on three Motorola FRS/GMRS radios a few years ago. Waterproof, rechargeable, and they don't reach a mile out of my somewhat hilly, wooded neighborhood outside of Raleigh. I was very disappointed. "Up to 30 miles" the box said. Maybe in space.

Anyway, like Lawless said, get your "Technician" license and a $30 Baofeng, and then you can talk to people.

Thanks guys. This may be easier then I realized!

If I could reliably communicate up to 100 miles, I would be more than pleased.

I've been looking around at testing sites, and could take the tech exam on June 11th... Would I be jumping the gun if I tried to take it in 2 weeks?

It seems I just need a manual and some time?

There were a couple of scouts there, 12 years old, who passed tech the night I tested. I studied and passed tech and general with less than a week of actual study.

In a few minutes, I will send you the study materials to make it easy.

OK, here is the free tech study guide. If you read it with the idea that it come DIRECTLY from the test, it makes sense and will give you the basics.
http://www.kb6nu.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/2014-no-nonsense-tech-study-guide-v20.pdf

Now, once you read it, really read and digest it, then you start flash cards. Online flash cards do two things very well, they drill into your brain the actual questions and answers from the exam, and they give you instant feedback as to your answers. Positive reinforcement.

Do the cards for an hour or so each night or give yourself a break of a few hours if more than once per day so you don't burn out, and you will be able to pass the test.
There are two flash card sites I recommend (you can also take practice exams).
https://hamstudy.org/tech2014
https://hamexam.org/

And another place to take practice exams
http://www.eham.net/exams/

If you do not already have a tech background, understanding the relationships between the electrical measurements and the function of the components will be the biggest challenge. There are two ways around this, either try to actually understand these things or simply do flash cards and practice exams until the answers are memorized. The graphic below will make perfect sense once you begin to study and read. Good Luck! You can do it.

If your goal is to talk with someone that far away, the repeater you're hitting will have to be in range of your handheld, online, and reliable, as well. That goal is doable, and, in the right condition, is a piece of cake. But in the wrong conditions (no power for one) it may be far from easy.

I see. Primarily, I would like to use them for communication within a county or two if cell service was down. Now if I could hit south-central VA from my location, then that would be an added bonus.

@Lawless thank you for those links, I will take a look.

But probably not so much lately if propagation on 10 meters is any indicator .....
The propagation of 11M is so sketchy and with so much gibberish traffic it is just too aggravating. SSB is better and long ranges are possible but are also so dependent on conditions as to be useless for real deal commo. I messed with it for years, I have a love for it, but I sold my gear and don't miss it. 10M is no better.

My HTs handle most of my local talking and can easily hit everyone in my tribe from the JARS repeater. If it went down, then other bands/radio and wire antennas would be the main modes I use. 20, 40, 80 to the rescue.

not trying to argue
Yes, yes you are. In every thread you post in you come across as a well read basement dweller with zero point to be made but rather spewing facts, figures and conjecture like a busted sprinkler. You pick out tiny things which may be assumed to be understood by the poster and yell them like the kid the teacher never wants to call on. That MJ threat showed about everyone here to just ignore your happy azz, is that what you came here for? To be ignored? Farg man, lighten the freak up.

I think most hams would agree that talking to your neighbor on 40M isn't the best method of grid down secret squirrel commo. I don't give a shiz what you use or anyone else, go for a CB or two cans and a string. Just please get a clue about how to not be "that guy" on this forum, right now you are.

You brought up CB in this thread and stated "There are plenty of people who have done serious CB DX using (illegal) linear amplifiers." so you were talking about long distance comms. CB in any shape is not reliable for important LOCAL use, it could be pressed into service but why? It sucks. Get your fargin ticket(to whomever sees this) and get on whatever ham band fits what you are doing with the right gear for the job and have at it.

@Armorpl8chikn dammitz to hell it aint even friday night.

I took it the same as lawless. 6m will reach way farther than a 2m any day. 50-75w on 2m MAY get you 100 miles simplex. I have talked to my wife on 6m way farther than that. A tri band mobile 6m 2m 440 will do more than he wants. With a simple beam antenna and the people he wants to communicate with has the same on 6m he should be more than good
