What gun did you just have to buy only later to be totally disappointed with it?
Around 1980 I bought a Colt Sauer rifle chambered in 7MM Remington Magnum. It was a beautiful rifle with dark figured wood, deep rich blueing, and an action that was the smoothest of any rifle that I have ever handled. During this time in my life, I was doing a lot of handloading and enjoyed working up loads that my rifles liked. I set out to find a load that my new beauty would like. I mounted a Leupold 3-9 scope in Leupold bases and rings and set out to fire some 3 shot groups using different bullet and powder combinations. The groups looked more like a shotgun pattern than a rifle group.
Even though I had never had a problem with any Leupold, I thought that it had to be the scope. A friend had a 3-9 Swarovski scope that he let me borrow. I had the same results. I wasted a lot of powder and bullets trying to get that rifle to shoot better than 2 inch groups. It just wouldn't do it.
Another friend knew of my problems with the rifle but he wanted it. I think he thought he could figure it out. He traded me a Remington 40XB chambered in .25-06 for it. He ended up trading the Colt Sauer at a gun show after he couldn't get it to perform any better than I did.
I enjoyed the 40XB for several years before I traded it off for something that I had to have at the time. I have thought about that Colt Sauer over the years and to this day, it has been the gun that I was the most disappointed in.
