It's sad that you think you are better than Someone using a 223 for deer when you sit here and say you pop deer in the head with a 22
Shut up and get off this guys thread

I know what the 223 round is capable of you obviously think the round is garbage
Tell that to all the people we kill with the 223 all the different options available for the 223 makes it an effective hunting round along with all the other applications it has including long range precision in high wind!
please.
give us a few examples of the deer you have killed with your 223.
range, load, POI, conditions ect.
I am eager to learn from your experiences. As always I love to be proven wrong. proven.
I have taken 6 deer with the round. none over 55 yards. 4 from a 20" AR and two with a 700 PSS. 4 neck shots and two noggin pops. needless to say they dont budge after the shot.

Someone a lot smarter than me said "when hunting food is the issue, too much energy and too much bullet is a minor sin"

Let me add.
I am not looking to be argumentative.
I am just trying to understand the logic behind using a very small caliber weapon to shoot deer in the chest.
I mean, if you are old or frail, a youngster or small woman, have severe injuries or other issues that require the most minimal of recoil I understand that a 223 would be the "natural" choice.
however there are other solutions to negate recoil and still have energy.
If the issue is that you ONLY have that caliber to use then as I suggest you keep ranges tight and aim for the neck.
If your skill is as such that you are unable to hit the neck then I suggest more practice.
But, still, I dont understand the logic behind the use of the 223. UNLESS, its to stunt-hunt.
And thats cool with me. I mean...I could probably arrange the situation in which i could kill a deer with a hammer and an oatmeal cookie, but it wouldnt prove anything.

Your being closed minded. Just because *you* dont think its the best round for deer does not mean that other hunters may not think different. If you dont like the round for deer, great. I'm sure you have something that fits you better.

For the people like myself using the round for deer, we obviously find it more than capable of doing the job humanely and effectively.

I havent killed a ton of deer. But i can tell you I've never lost a deer I shot at. I've let just as many deer walk because i couldnt get a shot than I've killed. I dont go into the woods with a itchy trigger finger to shoot a deer in the friggin head!! By your logic I need to get a .300 mag, find the most accurate load, practice 3hrs a day so then when squirrel season comes in I can use it for head shots only. I appreciate your concern to give ethical advice but advocating to shoot a deer in the head is not a good idea. I will agree it is possible, but really no need for it.

I dont even own a magnum. nor do i have an itchy trigger finger.
when i choose a head shot or a neck shot its due to other concerns, mainly putting the animal down on its feet.
W\]When I hear that the shot HAS to be in the body nad HAS to be with a 223, what it sounds like, to me, is that someone wants to play bullet test on a live animal.
Otherwise why wouldnt you just shoot a 243 or use the 223 and make a neck shot?
Is the 243 too much gun?
Is a neck shot over your ability?
Or is it that someone wants to run around in the woods with a black rifle to look cool?
I have yet to hear a real reason for using the 223.
I mean something of substance that shows a thought prosses.
And, NO! quite frankly. I dont think its the BEST round for deer.
DO you?
really think its the BEST?

Again, stop being closed minded. If *YOU* dont think its the best, thats perfectly fine by me. I'm sure you have chosen a round that suits you just fine. Stop trying to change others minds on what they have chosen.

We obviously choose .223 for several reasons, leave it at that.

The .223 was orginally designed as a wounding round on human sized targets for the military. Yet, it being 2012 and the vast amount of need to prove oneself correct in the purchasing of the all mighty AR-15, the media has pasted the virtues of the .223 way past it's designed abilities. It ain't no 30/06.

Then maybe you should troll the "Hunting and Fishing" section for you answer. I believe my original post was ".223 deer loads". Not, "Is the .223 adaquate for taking deer". But anyway, thanks for you opinion :). Have a nice day.

Obviously you misunderstand.
YOU chastize me for not thinking that the 223 is" BEST" (your words) so That means you DO think its the best?

Look, the Op is asking which kayak to use to get to France. Some of you guys are giving him fine examples of great kayaks.
I'm just suggesting that he rethink the enedeavor or stick to the lake.

You seem to be the one misunderstanding. I never once said it was the best, I said it worked for the people that use it.

You arent going to change any minds here, we like it. Leave it at that.

I find it a damned shame that NCWRC even approved anything less than .24 caliber for deer hunting. And if you want to talk about "stunt hunting" bring up head and neck shots, piss poor sportsmanship on both fronts.
Use enough gun for a humane kill and learn the internal organ placement in order to achieve such. Don't you feel the animal deserves it?????? Obviously not......

You ever used .223/5.56 to harvest a deer? Do you personally know the performance of the round inside an animal? Have you seen botched kills from a .223/5.56 and not with any other caliber?

perhapes a new persective is needed with regards to filtering information based on its source.
