Who makes the best one for the money?
I have heard good things about Gemtech, but not too much about others.

The Gemtech OB-II-D is worth a look and so is the Apex from Innovative Arms, both are light weight aluminum take down cans.
I think one should consider the host gun since the weight of a SS can makes a huge difference vs an alum one on pistols.
For rifle hosts it's not as obvious but you'll notice the additional weight of a SS can if you tote the gun around in the woods.

A member and I have have been looking at the Thompson Machine Zephyr. If I remember right it's rated for 22LR, 22 Mag, 17 HMR and 5.7x25(FN pistol round). I could be wrong on this though.

Plan to go talk to PD&HSC this week and see what they have in stock. I will let you know what they say.

The Spectre is also rated for all of those calibers.

I like the Spectre. Its SS and built like a tank. The advantages of SS are that it is so much easier to clean than aluminum. You're making a lifetime investment so get something that is made well and easy to maintain. Definitely avoid sealed cans if you're a high volume shooter.

Don't be afraid to order from dealers who may be out of state but have what you want in stock. Many local dealers only charge $50 or so for the Form 3(Dealer to Dealer) transfer which is worth it when you're getting what you want rather than settling for what they have.

I have been looking for a good .22 can too. Seems like the Spectre is highly reccomended. Any opinions on the YHM Mite in stainless steel?

Also does anyone know what Guns Unlimited in Ayden charges for an NFA transfer?

I'd pass on the Mite....they are loud. Will sound okay but you will be disappointed once you hear any of the better options.

The Spectre is a very nice can, but you can also look at the Silencerco Sparrow, AAC Element, and Surefire's new rimfire can.

Hey Wahoo...do you have a Spectre? The only issue I have with mine is taking the rear "bell" off of the first baffle...it's a bitch even when clean. I don't suppose there's even a need to do so, even for cleaning, but I do anyway. Just always afraid that I'll deform it in some way trying to release it.
