I'm looking to upgrade my 3 Gun shotgun.Everyone at the matches says "Benelli!", but dayum they're expensive. $1,300 for the gun before you get into the "necessary" upgrades like tube, etc.

The FN SLP MK1 looks good and should be ready to roll out of the box.

The Remington Versamax Competition looks like it has everything you need right out of the box.

What are y'all running and what are the plus/minus points?

Wish you were closer wife has a new versamax and I have a m2. You could try both. Versa definitely shoots softer than my m2 but my m2 eats anything. So far the versa does too but being gas it could fail on lite loads.

I have owned all three at different times, but never shot 3 gun. Nelli is simple easy to manipulate. Never had an issue. FN SLP was very smooth and ran great. Came with everything as you mentioned. Also never had a problem. Had the Versa Max, but we didn't get along. The gun may work fine, but it wasn't a good fit for me.

Between the 3 I stuck with the nelli. Personal preference. I think they are all good choices.

Heard some not too good things about the FN's reliability or lack of. Shot the Benelli and it was good but found the Versamax slightly softer shooting and the recoil was easier to get back on target quickly. The Benelli recoiled up and over (sideways) , while the Versamax had a slightly softer upward push. This test was done with both guns after they had been worked on by a good gunsmith (Joel P) , while shooting light field loads. My results, and why I bought the Versamax. Hope that helps. Good luck.

Best deal for the least amount of cash?? The Versamax Competition Tactical. It comes out of the box ready to run... The Benelli M2 is an awesome shotgun but you have to invest more $$ after the initial purchase.. I have shot both platforms. A Versamax is the cheaper way to go...

The Versamax Tactical is a good choice but needs some additional work to be 3 gun ready..

I shoot a Versamax Competition Tactical and it runs great and eats anything shoved past the lifter... lol!

Hope this helps..

Did you 'need' to do anything to it out of the box?

Another +1 for the Versamax. I have the Versamax Tactical, got mine right before the Competition Tactical model became available. The only things I've done to mine extra so far is adding a welded/extended lifter by C-Rums and I also picked up a +1 and +2 cap for the mag tube. So far, it has run with no issues using Wal-Mart bulk pack stuff. May end up getting the loading port hogged out and adding a rear XS sight, but no rush to do that yet. Just getting started in the multi-gun stuff, so getting a bit more trigger time with it before I make any big changes.

I've got a 1301 and a Versamax. The versa shoots a little softer due to being heavier, but I prefer the Beretta. Of the two the Beretta is the closest to being race ready out of the box. The Versa needs some tweeting to load and run smooth. In two years Of shooting 1-2 matches a month and several majors I've had one malfunction with the Beretta and it was due to ammo. The Beretta shoots slugs like a rifle, I just use the bead. Went 1for 1 on all the slugs at Tarheel South Saturday.

What did you have to do to the VM to get it to load and run smooth?

I would like to shoot the 1301 as well.. I've heard good things about it.... I did notice the 1301 comes out of the box with only a 5+1 capacity and one choke whereas the
VMCT comes with 8+1 capacity, a +2 tube extension, and 4 Remington ( Briley ) chokes.

What about the 930 JM Pro Mossburg? I have an SPX I use, little short for 3 gun, but the thing never fails, I just have to think out my reloads more. I couldn't find a Versamax at the time. I love that SPX shotgun. Shoots fast. I have never had an issue with feeding or firing. ArmrPl8 has one of the JM Pro's I shot at his Conover match and I loved it. $700 ish. Lots cheaper than the Remmy and 1 less second mortgage than a Benelli. I have shot the Benellis too, but I don't think spending that much more would give me a return on my investment. Well, except braggin' that I shoot one. And there is that. hahaha

Honestly, I wouldnt hesitate on the Mossburg, Remmy or Beretta or the Benelli. I have found that Remmy and Benelli has the most aftermarket parts, followed closely by the Mossberg. For my level of competing, $700.00 is a good price for me to spend.

I have a Mossberg 930 now and am looking to upgrade. It's been fine for about 2 years worth of matches, but I'm ready to move up.

My JM930 24" seems to do everything perfect, beyond opening the loading port up more and welding the lifter is somewhat hard to see what another solution would offer. The Stoeger M3000 that that is popular to mod for 3gun, has a new sibling in the linup in a couple weeks, the M3K, which is a 3gun ready version, it just needs a extended tube. The Versamax competition and Berettea 1301 Competition (that needs a tube) makes since as ready to shot models as well.

Polish the internals including the trigger, polish the mag tube, relieve some off the shell catch, open the loading port, install the competition lifter and blend the forend so it doesn't catch your hand or the shells for load two or quads. I added a plus two mag extension not shown in the pic, so it's 10+1.

Came down to the Beretta v the VersaMax Competition Tactical. Seemed to be toss up, but the Beretta is a bit lighter and my wife has shown interest in shooting clays. Also, that Versamax with the green receiver and faux carbon fiber is just ugly as sin. The cost will end up being about the same after you factor in the extension and a couple chokes.

Also, I have a sour taste for most things Remington these days since they seem to have so many QC issues. Maybe not fair to compare the shotgun line to what they've done with the R51 and Marlins. But it is what it is.

Oh it's fair. Their shotgun line has been effected also. Remember the 105 CTi, I'm sure they don't won't us to remember that. I almost bought one, glad I didn't, I ended up buying a Browning Gold then a Beretta Extrema 2 with a mag extension for range fun. Also the Remington 887's have been recalled recently. The Versa Max had issues during the release, they seem to have recovered. The Versamax is probably the only current new Remington product I would think about getting if I found a deal.

Only negative about Beretta I have heard of is the slow customer service, but your less likely to need it with any the the Big 3 B's in the shotgun world, Browning (FN), Bellini, Beretta.
