It seems that the racist idea of the flag comes from the groups that confiscated it post Civil War. That probably has more to do with the idea than the actual war itself.

The same would befall the Gadsden Flag if a group took it as their symbol and started doing some really crazy stuff. Or any other.

That is a good point... most people have little to no understanding what the war was about and the specifics of what each side was really fighting for. If you were thinking only/mostly slavery, you may want to re-take high school U.S. history.

It is unfortunate that so many people do fly that flag for the wrong reasons, but I don't think we should judge the many over the few. I've met a few people that have/fly them, most are just civil war buffs proud of being from the south.
