Acog+Pistol Red Dot vs. LPVO+Pistol Red Dot?

I recently had a discussion with someone who was an advocate of the LPVO setup but I was leaning more toward the ACOG. I have my reasons and he had his but I'm curious what others are saying.

This will belp determine what setup I go with for one of my rifles.

I’ve used both. I’ve had a TA11 with RMR, Nightforce NX8 with RMR (1.70 height), and currently use a Nightforce ATACR with RMR (1.70). In my personal experience, I’ve preferred the LPVO over the Acog. I just like having extra magnification.

Howveee, I also tend to use the 1X on the ATACR more than the dot. I found it too high when piggy backed. I may try canted and see if I prefer that

Here is my opinion on this matter. If we look at how these optics are intended to be used, and then look at your use case, you can easily answer this question for yourself. Let's apply an arbitrary 80% rule. LPVOs are intended to be used at 1x 80% of the time and maybe used the extra magnification 20% of the time. Time/speed is the only real reason to use a top dot/red dot on an LPVO if you have the mag cranked up...or you were in a competition. ACOGs are the opposite. They would be using the 4x or whatever power the ACOG is 80% of the time and that top dot/red dot only 20% of the time. So, if you primarily plan to use 1x, get an LPVO. If you plan to shoot magnified, the ACOG has its place. The ACOG is historically 'tougher' than a LPVO due to just having a fixed power prism rather than the variable power in the LPVO, but ATACRs are pretty rugged in my experience.

I run Primary Arms prism optics and an offset pistol red dot on my ARs. I've had both setups and I think it's easier to have a fixed magnification and just tilt over to the red dot. With the lvpo, it felt like getting anything other than min/max magnification required too much attention. Plus you have to move your hand to change magnification. Overhyped in my opinion.

Lvpos are also heavier than an single magnification prism. I tried a 4-16 out recently and ended up returning it in favor of the prism / red dot setup. Unless you're shooting long distance, I'm against a vpo. With a 5x prism, I'm more than comfortable out to around 300 yards. If you're consistently engaging past that, maybe skip lvpo and go for higher magnification?
