If so I have some questions and maybe some business for you. A neighbor that I do IT work for wants to buy one of those boxed security camera/dvr combos you see in the big box stores. Due to a recent incident he is ready to move on it. I would be the one doing the installation. This would most likely suffice for his immediate need, however we eventually will also want to position cameras up to 300 yds away which would far exceed the camera/cabling technology the system comes with. Are those systems typically adaptable to something other than unpowered analog video or do I need some other kind of dvr/web server chassis, maybe build one out of a PC? We want all cameras to be accessible via the same web interface. He wants lots of cameras so initial per camera cost needs to be low.

If he goes with the boxed set of course that wouldn't be any local business opportunity but the longer distance cameras and transmission hardware might be.

No this would be 300yd down a private road. That one would have power because there is a light pole there we can use, but there may be one or two about 100 yds away with no power.
