I was with the gf at a park the other day and there were kids throwing gravel at cars from a bridge. I wasn't sure if that warranted a 911 or a non emergency call or if I should just stay out of it. Thoughts?

Yeah, I'd call non-em in a heartbeat for that.

I wouldn't call it an emergency, but definately call.

Throwing rocks at cars is at least property damage, and it can be anything from barely noticable nicks to hundreds for glass replacement, body work, and painting.

In extreme cases, an overreaction by a driver could result in a wreck with possible injuries/death.

Let the police handle it...might be just a warning (they don't see anything or no stopped vehicles complaining), a citation, calling parents, or an arrest. Their call.

Of course, it might also be an opportunity for a fatal choke-hold or possibly a shooting nowadays... ;)

I don't suppose one could take a picture with their smarty phone and text it to 911?

911 is the number drilled into everyones head therefor it's the only number I'd know to call. Maybe they should establish a non emergency phone number like 1-800-popo.

I'm thinking @RetiredUSNChief is spot on in his assessment that they could have caused an accident.

A shout at them may have caused them to stop what they were doing.

It used to be that the non emergency number was listed on the first page of the phone book. I know, what's a phone book. Last time I went looking for the number, I couldn't find it and ended up just calling 911 and telling them it's not an emergency but I don't have the regular number.

I’m going to chime in on this one because I have personal experience with this exact subject. I have a large dent in the left front fender of my truck to prove it. This all happen when I lived in Asheville…
Driving home one night and suddenly hear/feel BOOM!! I thought I hit something or an animal ran into the side so I pull over and start checking for damage. While I’m doing this I hear someone start cussing at me and calling me names so now I’m looking around thinking I’m about to get jumped. I finally locate the yeller and it’s two black kids hiding in the woods along the road. They were approximately 30ft higher than the road surface on a hill and were sitting up there throwing brick sized rocks at passing cars.
I called the police and they sent a car while I waited there trying to keep an eye on the kids. Of course once they saw me make a phone call they soon started climbing the hill since there was an apartment complex on the other side of the hill. When the cop arrived I told him what happen and he was aware of the situation since I wasn’t the first to complain. He said that if it were to happen again the best thing I could do would be to keep driving and then call so that the kids stay put and could actually be caught. He then explained that the apartment complex was nearly all black and all the kids wore the exact same clothing so they could not be identified. So I saw a 14-16 year old black kid wearing jeans and a red t-shirt…there could be 10-15 people that match that description in that complex.
So absolutely call the cops and get them involved. Even gravel could scare someone and make them jerk the steering wheel. If they graduate to larger items it could get serious in a hurry. What you described doesn’t merit a 911 call in my eyes but it definitely merits a phone call.
It also merits a serious ass whooping.

Yeah call because shooting at them is frowned upon! My dad had some dumbazz drop a concrete block off a bridge o his big truck. Hit right above the windshield and peeled back about 5 feet of roof. If someone would have been setting there it would have taken off their head! So yeah, call them.

When I was a teenager, we used to spit hockers on cars. That was all. We would try and time them to hit the windshield. We knew that anything else would result in an ass whooping from the victim, anybody else in the car, the police and finally mom and dad. We knew where the line was.
