Breaking in my new HK VP9

I may have missed it if there is one but I don't think I've seen a review for the VP9 on here yet so I thought I'd share some opinions.

I've been looking at the VP9 since I heard about it coming out a few months ago and finally was able to pick one up a couple of weeks ago from my LGS in Wilmington. First thing that drew me to it is the ergos. It just feels so good in the hand. The ability to "tune" the grip to your hand is a wonderful thing. It feels better and just seems to meld in my hand. I don't have huge hands but they're not small and I have it set up with the L side on the right, M backstrap, and S side on the left. It gives me a nice full feel in my palm while giving me enough room to dig the heel of my support hand in and get a nice high grip. It allows me to put the first pad of my trigger finger comfortably on the trigger naturally where I like it. The textured grip panels definitely have enough to keep it from being squirrelly but I may end up throwing a Talon grip on it in a while.

As for shooting it points very naturally for me and is very easy to control what recoil there is. The higher bore axis really didn't seem to make a huge difference and there's not a lot of muzzle flip making follow up shots very easy. It has standard 3-dot sights that are luminous in any light plus glow for a good bit after being charged for when you need. The trigger has a smooth take up and nice clean break as well as a tactile and short reset. It doesn't break as far back as the Walther PPQ and the reset isn't as quick but out of the box, the trigger feels better than any other striker fired pistol I've shot. The Mag release at the back of the trigger guard might take some time to get used to but I like ability to hit it with my trigger or middle finger and not have to change my grip at all. Mags fall away super easy and reloading is smooth and very natural.

And after putting around 650 rounds through it I can tell it will get better as it breaks in more. It has eaten everything Ive fed it from bulk Blazer, American Eagle and UMC to Hornady Critical Defense and Federal Hydro-Shok, as well as my own reloads. It does seem to like 124s and 147s for me. I have been able to get 1.5" - 2" at 25 yds if I do my part.

The one problem I've run into was finding mags. It was built to take the HK P30 mags but they have all been fairly elusive to date.

Anyway these are my opinions and some people may disagree with me. But in my mind it is money well spent. I think it may turn into my new IDPA or Steel Challenge pistol. If anyone else has any opinions I'd love to hear them. Cheers.

Great review. I got to shoot one not too long ago and I really liked the trigger and the way it felt in my hand. I also shot a p230 (I think that's the right one) the HK felt better to me grip wise. The trigger on the Sig was nice as well, overall I like the VP9 better.

Gandrtactical.com for mags. They're generally available here and for $38 a piece. I also had good luck sourcing mags from cheaper than dirt for around $36 a piece when I had my VP9s.

They're gone now for the simplicity of g19s...

Yeah that has been the worst part. Ive been just a little too late when I've seen them on here or Armslist and one day I called every gun store I could think of from Wilmington to Raleigh and they were all out. I was lucky enough to find a couple at a local gun shop in Fayetteville but that was it.

I've got a Sig P320 as well and while I do like it the VP9 definitely wins over it.

Nice write up.
My wife has a VP9. Loves it. She shoot that all day. The paddle mag release is a Godsend for people with arthritis. So much easier than button mag releases. And the slide has to be darn near the easiest to rack in the size class. Quite possibly the best 9mm for those with compromised hand or arm strength as well but don't want to comprise going smaller caliber. Wife has really long fingers so little pocket guns are out of the question. Smallest she can handle easily is her CCP.

I don't have the VP9 but I do have the P30 and I can say exactly the same thing about handling it. It fit my hand perfectly and, after the first I handled one I know I had to have one.
Nice write up and I know you will enjoy it, my P30 quickly became one of the primary carry pistols in my line up.

I shot my neighbor's VP9 back to back with my PPQ, and had almost identical (small) spreads. I shoot slightly larger spreads with my P226, and significantly larger spreads with my Glock 23C.

I like the VP9 almost as much as my PPQ. The triggers, the ergonomics...those are definitely the best striker-fired pistols on the market.

I have also recently purchased a VP9, and had the pleasure of taking it out on our first date last weekend. It shot dead accurate for me, and is to date the best striker fired pistol I've handled. I don't think the trigger is better than certain aftermarket triggers for striker-fired guns, but as far as an out of the box trigger, it's the best one yet (Haven't tried the PPQ yet).

The only thing I'm having to change up is my firing hand thumb, as if it lays naturally where I'm the most comfortable with it, it causes the slide lock to stay depressed and will not lock back on the last round. Once I can figure out a good stable grip to work around this it will be going on the belt as much as possible.

Thanks for a great review! The VP9 is on my "short list," but is behind a P229 Enhanced Elite...so it may be a year or so before I pick one up. Patience may be a virtue, but it sure ain't easy!

I lurve mine! (Woody Allen joke. See Annie Hall.)

I got extra mags from HK parts. Order online.

This thing just fits my hand like a glove....sort of like I feel, about my CZ. I picked up a Glock the other day and reminded myself why I don't like Glocks. They just don't feel good in my hands.
