Bushing or No Bushing...that is the question

Of course the orginalists seem to prefer the barrel bushing for obvious reasons, but I have found I prefer the look and feel of a bushingless, bull-barreled 1911 over the standard design. What are your opinions on the two designs?

I have owned several over the years. The advantages of a bushing is they are easier to disassemble. I'm not sure as to the advantages of a FLGR, but I really prefer them over the GI short one. Opened up a new can of worms on this subject. It really depends on your personal preference.

I like both. I think the bushing and knurled plug look cooler. But would really prefer not to look at that end very much!! My EDC is a bull barrel SA RO Compact.

I find models with a barrel bushing are easier to disassemble and clean, which is a plus in my book. Makes me feel a bit more comfortable about carrying a 1911 since I won't mind breaking it down as much for routine maintenance / lube. Bull barrels are fine, just more of a hassle.

Not if you have one of the spring loaded guide rods. I can use a pen, pocket knife or small screw driver to take my 10mm apart. Is really no trouble.

I prefer a 1911 without the bushing. Only slightly more complicated to take down. I like the little bit of extra weight in front. I have some with bushings as well and have full length guide rods in them. I think it’s just personal preference. I’m not sure one has a big advantage over the other.

Not all are created equal
I have a Les Baer Premier II, with the 1 1/2” @ 50 yard group guarantee, and a Wilson, that was tightened up and hard chromed, and given the same group guarantee by Rock River Arms, and I NEED to use a steel bushing wrench, and tap it with a brass hammer to turn, and then have to use a brass punch, and hammer to remove them from the slides. I’ve had other 1911s that I could remove the bushings without any tools, but they weren’t accurate enough for ME

Interesting. I may have to order one of those to replace the factory guide rod.
