I’m bored, and wife fell asleep so I thought I’d start a thread...

looking into finally getting the wife a pistol.

she doesn’t shoot much, but is on board with carrying and committing to more regular practice.

Anyway... I was curious what the ladies are carrying these days?

also curious if y’all know anything about the “well armed women” groups that may be around and opinions on those.

I was gonna post in the women’s only thread, but it doesn’t seem too active lately.

Remmy - my wife and I have CCPs in NC and have carried for a few years now. From my solo experience with
my one and only, she likes them compact enough that the sidearm fits the hand well and the recoil isn't that
heavy. This prob. means a 9mm semi or a .38/.357 in a revolver. However a big issue with her is she needs a
semi-auto that is easy to rack the slide on. Thinking a S&W 9mm M&P/Shield EZ model here or a Glock or a
SIG P365 if she can handle it. There are other models. Also consider how she will choose to carry a sidearm.
If she goes with a purse type carry, there are several options, but she can lose control of her purse and the
weapon. If holster carry, it is important to find the wife one that fits and works for her body shape and any
infirmities so she will carry it without finding it completely uncomfortable or irritating. There are many holster
styles out there so you will have to do your homework on that...there is a reason many CCPers have a bag or
box full of holsters they have tried and found wanting before they find the right one for them and loved ones.
Just listen to her and see what she says re. these issues. best, redclay7

I teach CCH classes, and too carry every day.

I just got her a G43, and was surprised she didnt like it... Im now looking a shield as I used to have one and she liked it. You can look for that 43 on the classifieds today lol

It may seem crazy, but I never even considered her carrying anywhere other than her purse. Your reasoning (loosing control of the purse) is the same as was pointed out to me earlier by a co-worker. I will definitely take that into consideration!

Remmy, here's a link to " The Women's Pistol Project " conducted by American Rifleman. It gives the results of real-life preferences by women and can provide you with a good list of pistols for your wife to try.
After using the article to help narrow the choices, I highly recommend finding a gun range that rents so she can test drive as many as possible to see what her preference is.

Remmy, my wife won't consider anything but on the body control of her weapon so that is why we have to go through all
the procedure of addressing her issues and likes/dislikes....she has a 43 but prefers her P365...best, redclay7

My wife has a ccp and a revolver both. She is comfortable with the revolver because of not having to work the slide. She likes the ccp however because the grip fits her, she can work the slide easily on the ccp and the fact that it’s a lot lighter than the revolver is why she carries it. It’s been a good gun for her, and I also like the gun myself.

Ive found after attempts at teaching my wife of 30+ yr on Semi Autos, With her practice/ range attendence of 1x every 2 yr at this point, a S&W 442 5 shot small, lite revolver stoked with +P's (148 gr Wadcutters that I load way down w/ llike 2.7 gr unique or Bullseye or 3 gr W 231 or ?? Id have to look ) is a Perfect fit for her. She has a purse holster, keeps it in the nite stand when Im away on business- dosn't have to remember if that "thingie that puts the bullets is in" and does she have to pull that "hard thing back and check if there's a bullet in there" that broke her nail last time I tried to have her shoot an auto. Then God forbid there's a jam/ stove pipe, failure to feed, etc.
The revolver is perfect- the lite loads are pleasant to practice with every other year I talk her into hitting the range and blowing out the dust. She knows how to push the button, flop out the cylinder, look and see that its loaded and that gives her comfort when Im gone or she's in an iffy situation doing real estate that she does, etc.
Shes Never 1x fired one of the 125gr +P's that its stoked with and Im hoping she never does. My thinking is that if that ever became a reality , adreneline would be in play and a little more recoil won't mitigate her will to survive and she ll hold center of mass as I've taught her and weve practiced with the 148gr nice lil pop gun wadcutter loads that punch a nice round hole in the target at 7 yd.

Her confidence in her rig, her abilities to understand it- albiet at a very basic level .. BUT more than enough to put a few out of the 5 into a bad guy center of mass 10' away- foucsing on the front site as I've taught her, etc.
The "Auto thing" just NEVER worked for her and her S&W 442 38 SPL stoked with PMC 125gr +P's is with her all the time and she has had her hand on it in her purse at times and its given her ALOT of comfort, security , etc when I can't be there for her.

Just my observation after being married 33yr and going thru this whole thing.

Lots of good points made fellas

stgguy, found some of that very helpful, especially since I've had an itching for a new wheel gun lol
I've been married to a "City Girl" from Philly for 30+ yr and that is a summary of the process we've / I've been thru over that time! lol "City Girl marries Country Boy" who loves to shoot- so we started with .22's and worked up, I almost got shot once cause a bee flew around her head and I have a cocked/ hammer back Smith 586 shoved into my chest as she frantically waived at the bee, etc. Its been a process but the little Smith 442 has been the best solution so far and it helps her to feel more confident in a sketchy situation like real estste- alone at an empty house w an "iffy" male, etc.
