Cheap and fun things to shoot?

I'm not a hunter and paper is only exciting for so long. I like shooting things that react in some way (like the sound you get from steel) and I know a lot of other shooters feel the same way.

So tell me what you guys like to shoot that won't break the bank. The top of my list so far are old, empty LP and refrigerant tanks (local ranges use them - that's where I got the idea), bowling pins (alleys sell them dirt cheap) and steel. I even saw a guy who took an old Ford AC accumulator and filled it with baby powder so when the bullet hit it you got a nice white cloud.

Anyone have any other ideas that would be cheap and fun - ideally I'd love something that you can see the bullet hit from up to 300 yards.

How about an old pressure cooker that still holds a tight seal....fill it full of liquid drano and a bunch of strips of tin foil and seal the cooker up tight and give it a good shake to get the tin foil mixing with the drano. Walk down range (probably at least 50-75 yards to be safe) and shoot it and watch it explode. But I would give it at least 10-15 minutes before you shoot it depending on how fast the pressure builds up inside of the cooker.

This doesnt have the "bang" most of the suggestions do but i have used lolli pops before. Just pit it stick first in the ground you have instant targets. Probably more fun with a .22 than a large caliber rifle. I havent tried it yet but have thought about putting a little flour into a baloon and then blowing it up a little. Not sure how well it will work but something i have been wanting to try, lol.

When I was a dealership tech (in another life) I used to collect up the windshield washer fluid jugs (gallon) and fill 'em with water. They are very good for testing pistol ammo by lining jugs up and shooting. They are great for long distance rifle targets...especially varmint bullets. I used to get about 20 jugs a week easy.

One of my all-time favorites...

Back when AO(hel)L, mindspring, etc were mailing CDs at a rate of 12/week to every human on the planet... we would hang a stack (5 has good effect, but not like 10 ) on a nail in the backstop. A direct hit with your favorite supersonic ammo will cause the CDs to shatter into millions of pieces and produce a very nice "poof" of "glitter", especially if the sun's just right!

"Try it, you'll like it!" :w00t:

the neatest thing i ever used was a full gallon of milk i forgot to put away. after hitting it with a 7mm there was a neat white cloud that drifted down the valley.
i just had some steel plates welded up into a v pattern so i can drive down range and set them out.

Drill a hole in a golf ball, thread with some 550 cord, and tie it to something downrange. I use a wooden dowel and bungee cord it off to the side of a target frame.
Do one on each side and you can do some back and forth games with them.

I like the paintball idea, maybe take a 20oz soda bottle and cut it in half and pour a bunch of paintballs in it, Im not sure I could hit that at 300 w/o some ocular enhancement.

I used to walk the road for scrap aluminum and found several cases of nice green beer that by now is 10 years old or more. Ive been saving them up for the day I got a snazy 60 year old rifle with a scope on it to blowem away. The day has came and I havent had the chance yet.

I suppose you could take you some baking soda (or some other compounds) in water and agitated it in a soda bottle and shoot it at a distance, save the soda for afterwards:p

For the longest time I shot old harddrives, they're good for about 20 shots or more, and you can find old ones day and night.
