Cabelas has Herters 5.56 ammo - cheap - no limit - different quantities.

$4.99 / box of 20
also

500 rds plus dry box for $144.99
and

1,000 rds plus 2 dry boxes for $279

No limit, but ... unless they got several flat out boatloads... I'm guessing they run out soon.

Just ordered a few boxes. Basically Walmart pricing, which is good. For those that don't know, this is just re-boxed Tulammo. I've had great luck with it so far after over 1.5k rounds or so. For the price it's hard to be. A hair over $30 for 100 rounds shipped.

My guns do not like steel cases. Had 3 boxes of Tulammo and would get jams every 2-3 rounds. Same rifles, same day with brass and not a single hiccup. *shrug* Very nice price.

I've heard a lot of bad things about Herter's and saw a guy have nothing but problems with it in his BM at an Apple Seed.

Found Tula at WM for $5.27 last week, grabbed my limit for the heck of it.

My DPMS eats it like candy. Never has a problem with it.

Yes, it is mild steel.

The only issues they have as far as the cases go is that steel doesn't expand like brass so sometimes more carbon buildup forms in the chamber during firing. Sometimes this can cause shells to get stuck, especially if switching between steel and brass. A quick swab and scrub removes the buildup.

As far as the extractor goes, some say its harder on them...but considering you are spending $3-4 less on 20 of these than on cheap brass...after a few boxes the savings alone will pay for a few extractors.

The only hard evidence that I've seen that this stuff is worse for your firearms had more to do with the projectile. Often steel cased ammo has a mild steel core projectile washed in copper. I saw a study where this can lead to greater barrel erosion than using standard lead core. But those results were noted at over 10k rounds.

Do the math...

10k Tula/Herters : $3,000
10k average brass: $ 4,500-5,000

That $1.5-$2k you save can buy a few barrels...or a new rifle.

Some other issues are that some find it low on the power scale, so if your AR is sensitive to weaker ammo then performance may suffer.

This issues with steel case is not the hardness per se, but the rate of expansion and contraction, which is slower than brass. Therefore, it doesn't seal as fast, allowing carbon blow-by and buildup. It also doesn't contract as fast, so it doesn't release from the chamber as quickly. This is why it is hard on extractors. The gun is trying to pull the case out, but the case hasn't let go yet. This is especially true for shorter gas tube guns that already try to extract during peak pressure. In full size guns with the longer gas tubes, the extraction occurs after peak pressure.
