Cheating at Turkey Shoots? Really?

The family and I went to a turkey shoot last night. It was my wife's first time and my first in years. My daughter went, but didn't shoot. My son had been to a couple with the youth pastor and his sons.

There was an older fellow shooting with one of those frankenturkeyshootguns. No big deal. What I did find disturbing was he was loading ammo that he brought. He was slick. No one really saw him, but I did. He was handed the shell and he would put his shell in his gun and drop the issued round in his coat pocket.

What disgusted me about this act was the fact that kids were there shooting and you know they had expectations and hopes of winning. This guy didn't win all the rounds, but he did win the majority.

What would have disgusted ME was that you stood there and watched it without calling to an official's attention. Oh great, more silent sheeple! And yes, I would absolutely said something. I'd have drug him to a judge and made him empty his pockets then show them the round in his rifle.

Yea, cheating at a turkey shoot it a petty thing, but if he'll do that, I'll bet he'll do more, and when do we start stopping this crap? When it STARTS happening is the best time.

Don't know if I would go that far with my kids with me, gotta remember you already know he has a gun, and ammo for it, my kids safety comes before some guy stealing a turkey, I would have def had a discreet word with the crowd running tho.

If there is something to be won, whether a turkey, dollar bills, or just bragging rights, someone will be willing to skirt the rules to get ahead.

That's the main reason for the current financial crisis, IMHO.

A guy that'll cheat to beat a kid deserves a good smack in the mouth. Not advocating violence, but you should have at least embarrassed the hell out of him.

Idk about tattling about a guy at a gun event though. If he's low down enough to cheat, he may be low enough to try to follow you home. And who knows what could come of that?
I could be wrong, but probably not much would happen. I've known several that fit this guy's description, and none of those dirtbags or snakes had the spine to do anything that took real courage.

You might would have told the shoot managers, or even said something to the cheater. But you wouldn't have "drug" him anywhere.

most shoots have a 3 win max, but saying something to the officials would have been the right thing to do.

Can someone explain the ammo switching, how did it benefit him to use his own? I've never been to a turkey shoot and have no idea how they work.
I'm only guessing here, but since they give you a 2 3/4" shell that they loaded, they control the number of pellets in it. I don't think they are filled completely with shot. I think they have shot and something else as a filler. If you load your own, you can pack more shot in it. More shot means more holes in the paper. More holes in the paper means better odds of getting a pellet in the center.

I'm sure there are other things that can be done to a shell to guarantee more pellets on the paper.

Ehh, heavier load of shot, more pellets on paper, more of a chance for one to be closest to center, even tho everyone normally uses their own gun, the fact that everyone is using the same load should help make it more fair.....ie more luck than anything else

Some turkey shoots collect the spent case after each round to discourage this and use a different brand or load each night so people can't reload there cases from last week. I have run a turkey shoot before and worked at another this is very common way to cheat. We shoot .22's too and people would try to switch there match ammo for what you gave them. If you see it report it to the people who run the place they will take care of it.

I've heard of guys opening up their shells and pouring stuff in there to make the shot stick together until the sponsors started furnishing shells. Of course, if that guy was swapping shells, he was probably up to something else too. No telling what folks are doing now.

I would just get the longest full choke barrel available if I was serious about winning. The last one I went to, the majority of wins went to the longer full choke barrels.

Years ago I helped run a shoot for charity when this one fellow showed up and had his girl shoot the shotgun, we didn't pay alot of attention until we saw the target and quickly realised the guy had pulled the shell switch. Our rules were posted and when he paid for the next round he pulled the switch and we caught it just as his daughter raised to shoot. He was told to leave and not to come back with no refund. Our attendance increased after that episode as many people came knowing we ran it as fair as possible but even then the cheats would try to ply their trade; we had special shells for those folks.

When I was younger my uncle ran/worked a shoot for several years. You could win a frozen turkey or canned ham and money , We had a guy that tried to shoot a double and fire both barrels at the same time. First time he won several people spoke up due to sound of both barrels at same time and a lot of holes in paper. But no evidence that time, next time he shot he extra eyes on him and he didnt try it again. Found out later he went from shoot to shoot in area doing this. Another trick a fellow used was to place an extra packet of shot on front of shell with tape never caught the guy. He won a lot. An ex buddy ratted him out later. Also had friends that would shoot there buddies target at the same time he would shoot. Of course his target would have no holes. Had to watch for this.
Now a days a discreet video should work to catch a thief.

There are events for the super duper turkey shoot guns.....really no place for built guns at a regular turkey shoot. If it is an open event so be it, but not the local fund raising style shoots. When we ran the turkey shoot here no built guns were allowed....its pretty easy to spot them. We also had a limit of choke diameter per guage that was measured on every gun and you shot our shells or you were kicked out. If event organizers don't handle it right it hurts their turn out and profit.

Some of the shoots were using a factory shell and they have one range guy with a box or pouch on him and they hand you a shell, he places the spot number you are shooting and his name on it, after the match he picks it up and looks at it.
They used different ink, and stamp so it could not be copied.

Problem with most of the shoots out there is they are taking the fun out of the shoot.
Too much drinking, too much Money betting when you have the little kids out there to have fun. Also they can not hold the tongue at all around the ladys and kids.

You are there to have fun, win or loose... Have fun...
The fun is lost when you have the same drunks talking crap, trying to take money from people.... And this all happens for the good of what?
Some church, Fire department, lodge.......

BTW I stopped going for those reasons.
The older shoots that used stock guns for everyone like the one at the fair are so much better and fun....
