Man, I can just see the carnage. This will be better than the three round-abouts in Randleman! And I have seen some really stupid things at those round-abouts...
Yeah, those were my thoughts exactly. the high barriers/walls and fences make it look simpler... the angle of the intersection makes it look more like a "normal" traffic coming from the right, like a one way intersecting with your street. At street level that looks a lot less confusing than most "normal" intersections in Charlotte. They did a great job of visually separating the two lanes while switched to eliminate the "wrong side of the road" feeling.
This, but there is always that few thoDoesn't matter how simple or complex an interchange is if you don't pay effing attention to what you're doing...
It's the ones that haven't figured out that you need to MERGE with the traffic in the circle rather than waiting until the circle is totally clear that get me. Had to honk my horn at a lady the other day to make her move after the circle had cleared. Then there was the one who cut right in front of me from the inside lane into the right turn only lane with no signal. I'm really surprised there hasn't been a major accident at the big one...That's not a joke. I've seen so many people driving through on coming traffic since we've got those.
DOT has been crowing about how many of these "Diverging Diamonds" are going to be built in Charlotte. Including the upcoming I-485/I-85 interchange and the "upgrade" to a couple other I-85 interchanges. At street level that looks a lot less confusing than most "normal" intersections in Charlotte. They did a great job of visually separating the two lanes while switched to eliminate the "wrong side of the road" feeling.
A Georgia Tech student did a thesis showing how the interchange in Atlanta that merged Hwy 400 onto I-85 would be a disaster, much to the ridicule of DOT, his instructor, and the powers that be....he flunked the course, and so did DOT...DOT has been crowing about how many of these "Diverging Diamonds"
