Took my 16 y/o daughter to the range today, to teach her how to shoot. (she did great, BTW. VERY proud of her)

She asked me, "What's the NRA on your hat stand for."

Me- "National Rifle Association. They fight with the government to help preserve our right to own guns."

Her- <indignantly> "But that's in the Constitution!"

Me- "I know, kiddo." & gave her the commie/hippy/utopian day dreamer "reasoning" behind gun bans.

Her- "Well if someone has a gun illegally, how the <insert F bomb here> are we 'sposed to defend ourselves?!?!?"

I think the girl's gonna be okay

Good job man!

I'm going to have to call BS on this one.

An intelligent, reasoning 16 year old girl?

Next you'll be telling me she prefers the Glock to the 1911.

*BTW, for those without a sense of humor, I'm teasing*

I'll disown her if she says the "G word".

She's a strange kid, but is totally her own person. Marches to the beat of her own drummer, that's for sure. Takes no BS & doesn't accept anything for "fact" until she researches it. Pain in my backside sometimes, but she's a good kid.

My kind of crowd!!

My oldest daughter is 2 and already shown interest in my carry 1911. I've let her hold it a couple of times (and no it wasn't loaded) and try to explain to her that anytime she wants to see it or touch it, she should tell me and I'll always let her fondle it and of course drool over it if she wants to. Not sure if she gets the message quite yet.

I've also tried to teach her the phrase "Finger off the goddamn trigger" but she has trouble with her r's and can't quite speak that well to begin with. It's a work in progress.

I started 'er out with the basics- how to clear the weapon, operate the safety, weapon up/down range at all time, finger outta the dam trigger guard, etc.

Went thru a few iterations of me loading mags & handing 'em to her, just talking her though the process, range "cold" procedures & getting the safety ingrained.

After a few iterations, I was readly to shoot my Marlin 60 & asked her if she remembered everything I taught. She assures me she had, so I said, "okay, ammo's over there. Remember what a taught you. Knock yerself out.

'Course, I was keeping an eye on her, outta the corner of my eye while shooting the Marlin & she did great. Love having a smart kid who pays attention & does what they've been trained to do.

I'll get her worked up to my 1911s in a couple more range sessions. She needs some more .22 time, then maybe .22 rifle & some trigger time on her mom's carry .380 from there.

Had some primo father/daughter time & she even managed to cadge some Sonic out of me on the way how. Damn kid. lol... She's a total daddy's girl & she knows it.

So yeah, I'm the proud dad today. Girl-child done good & I'm very proud of how she handled herself, as well as how well she shot.

Good times.

Man...hopefully between the 2 girls that I have, I'll have at least one that I can take to the range and share your experience!

With my luck, they'll probably want nothing to do with firearms and will be infatuated with something totally lame like Twilight.

You may get surprised, dude. Most girls are "daddy's girl" at heart. I just tell her, "hey, I dig this; it's fun. I think you might like it to. Wanna give it a whirl?" 9 times outta 10, she'll try it out & end up loving it. B's a total daddy's girl & she'd at least willing to check out the stuff I'm into. She's totally not into sports/athletics, but throw her little butt in a wind tower & she flies like she was born with wings.

I just treat just her like a 3/4 scale person, not like "a kid" (unless I've got to be "evil dad", which doesn't happen often). I give her the facts & let her make her own choices. She soaks up every ounce of everything I tell her, often arguing law & politics with me (she hasn't discovered yet that what they learn in civics ain't exactly how the "real" world works). I just give her the best advice & information I can & hope/trust her to make the right choice. So far, she's doing pretty damn good.

I gotta tell ya, having a daughter old enough to drive & date freaks me the hell out. I was a BAD kid, so.....

She shaping up to be quite the no-BS, sticks to her guns young lady. Can't imagine a better outlook to instill into a you woman, about to go out into the world.

Can't help but ask...are you comfortable about your 16 year old daughter going around "dropping the F bomb" in conversation with you...or elsewhere?
Depends on context, but in this case, I was cool with it. Not like she's never heard me or her mom say it, so to tell her not to would be a touch hypocritical. Gratuitous profanity is never cool, but when/if it "fits" & is used appropriately, I'm not gonna get on her case about it

Too bad you are not closer to Statesville. I would be happy to teach her the NRA Basic Pistol class for free. She sounds like she has her stuff together.

Just offering to pay it forward for a young lady that has her priorities right.
