The Sheriff's Office says he told deputies that he answered a knock on his front door at around 12:40am. An unknown person shot him, but its not known how many individuals were outside that apartment.
There's probably more to the story that that, and I doubt this was random, but still... do YOU arm yourself when you hear a knock at your door?

I most always have one on my hip or within reach. If I am not expecting anyone...yes, I do.

during the day we keep the reg. door open and the screen/glass door locked, so i can see the person and the dogs can see/bark them so no during the day.........but after 5pm to 8am i will answer the door with my gun cause everyone i know calls b4 they come over, so a knock without a call means i dont know you

Seeing as how I am armed from the time I get dressed in the morning until I go to bed at night, yes......

If it was 12:40 am and I was awakened to answer the door it would be with an 870 in hand. That late at night no one I know is coming to my house without a phone call first.

My house is remote and the driveway has multiple "NO TRESPASSING" signs. When I hear a car on the long gravel/dirt road I have a rifle or shotgun in hand and watch it's winding approach long before it can see my house.

When I see it's the mailman, UPS, FedEx, DHL, relative or police... I put the weapon down (but not away, merely obscured from their vision in case I need it).

When I see it's a stranger/interloper... the weapon stays with me and I make contact.

Never an exception.

I have, on rare occasion, answered the door in my underwear.

This is after a visual assessment and determination that the unannounced visitor is either a Jehovah's Witness or an Amway salesperson.

They typically don't hang around long.

Been getting those people coming around to try to sell me this cleaner. They spray it in their mouth, say it's all natural. I tell them to leave repeatedly. They keep going. I answer door with gun in hand, the say nice gun and keep going. They don't care. Everyone else it works for, not them. So now I just open the door from the side and let the great dane convince them to leave before he eventually slams his way through the storm door. It's worked best so far.

but yes, 98% of the time I answer the door armed. The other 2% I already know who is there.

Not all the time, but most of the time. I find myself answering the door armed more and more as the incidents of home invasions go up. I hate to feel paranoid, but you just never know who is on the other side of that door.

Y'know, I'm just enough of a bastard that I think I'd keep a spray bottle of dirty water beside the door. They keep going after you've told them to leave, spray them with it and tell them you want to see their cleaner get the stains out of their clothes.

Not advocating this mind you, just saying I'm enough of a bastard to think about it..........:D

I always have a pistol when a stranger knocks or decides to walk through my yard (sidewalks are there for a reason). The wife goes to the bedroom at the same time to stand within reach of the shotgun

My home defense is in layers, as all should be......

A driveway chime signals me if someone drives in, the dogs sound the alarm for groundpounders. I them switch on the cameras (NV capable) to see if I can ident them. All of this is in condition orange. I am never more than 2ft away from my primary weapon system. This also gives me time to double check the rifle and do a press-check on the pistol.

When I answer the door, I leave a stop in place so it only opens 4". I have a M4 and 1200 rds at the ready in a mag bra. In the holster is a 1911 Kimber modified by Wilson and 9 more mags full of (3) hydray-shok and (4)TAP. The `ol lady covers me with a custom order Glock(.45acp, loaded with 3 hydra-shok and topped off with Glaser safety slugs, and the M1919 and 600 more rounds linked 200/belt. If they get thru that, I have claymores on photoeye sensors that should stop them. If not, my FPL should. I`m not gonna say what that is, but you don`t want to ever find out. We`re gonna make CNN Breaking News ;)

Better solution than being armed, I don't answer the door!!!!! If its someone I know they know to call in advance and if its someone I don't know then I don't want them in my face....... No exceptions!!!! Yes, I'm anti social.......

Looks something like this?

I think you'll be seen from the space station if all that goes off. Why not just invest in one of them suitcases with the red button that launches all the missles like the president gets.
