I looked for a thread on this subject and couldn't find a recent one, so here goes.
Recently I've been researching (and buying) guns for EDC. Starting from zero, my first was a Glock 27, because I trust the stopping power of .40s&w, I once had a G23 and loved it, and I figured the G27 would provide a similar experience in a smaller gun (which I think it does). After buying a few holsters for it, I decided it's too bulky for EDC (it's now my primary home defense firearm), and I've been told by many that since then there have been advances in 9mm performance that make it a sufficiently effective defensive round (which it definitely was not in 1992 when I bought my G23).
My basic premise is that while I want and expect to carry my EDC gun everywhere every day, I don't expect to ever need to actually use it (and I hope that's correct). So it needs to be as small and light as possible so that it'll be as comfortable as possible to carry, but also effective enough that it will do the job if the worst ever happens and I'm called upon to actually use it to defend my life.
My next purchase was a Sig P365, which I like a whole lot, and if 9mm is as effective as they now say, it should serve me adequately as an EDC. But even the 365 is just a bit bigger than I'd prefer to carry all the time. So my next buy was an even smaller micro 9, a Diamondback DB9 Gen4, which gets mixed reviews but at least it was cheap. I'll find out if it's reliable enough to replace my Sig for EDC after I've gotten to the range with it next week.
I've been wishing I could find something even smaller for EDC use, such as something as diminutive as some of the truly tiny .380acp pistols I've seen offered for sale, but I don't trust the caliber. If I'm going to trust my life to my EDC, I think it needs to have enough stopping power to save my life when needed.
I want to carry the smallest and lightest thing possible as an EDC as long as it's reliable and effective, so here's my question: Should I be satisfied with my micro 9's or has .380acp improved to the point where it can be reliably considered an effective round for civilian EDC use? Opinions about all three calibers would be welcome.
