I got rid of all my Peltors and got the Impact Sports from Howard Leight.

I like being able to monitor the radio while shooting. It's handy.

Easiest to change the batteries, fast cut out and return and better amplification.

I would pay attention to the Noise reduction (NRR) of the ones you are looking at. Some may be cheap, or comfortable (and thats usually the reason people reccommend them), but if they dont actually cut the noise to a safe level they arent worth long term hearing loss.

Personally I use 33NRR pro dimensions gold, they are large and heavy, but I've been in close proximity to a 50BMG with them and even with that cannon the noise was bearable.

my 2 cents:
buy the cheapest ones.
the technology is changing so fast,
that the 'best' right now will be standard
in 6 months....you just can't keep up.
for example: mine cost $27 with shipping.
two years ago....$103. SAVE UP.

i got howard leights about 3 years ago when my friends had peltors, they were 1/3 the price. i tried another with noise reduction and they were horrible. now i see the impact sports on everyone, because they are great! i also got a pair for my mom and dad. i use them for shooting and hunting. DONT go the cheap route, ive been there, there is a difference, howard leights are cheap but GOOD! the ones that CUT OFF at anything over 82db, stay away from them. it gets really annoying. and the impact sports will let you soulder a rifle or shotgun without interference.

I've used Peltors for years, they are good stuff. How much is retaining good hearing worth to you?
Which model are you reffering to? The Peltor Tactical 6 which is what they tout to the shooting sports has a NRR of 19 so there not as good as the Impact sports. If you go to their larger muffs they make it difficult to shoulder a long gun.

For most handguns at an outdoor range the Impact Sports are sufficient and with the addition of foam plugs under the Impact Sports you are good to go for indoor ranges, large caliber pistols and rifles outdoors, and you can still hear normal voice levels. Having tried both side by side the HLs have the Peltors beat hands down.

As a side note, there is a correct way and an incorrect way to insert foam plugs. Please do the research and learn the right way. You don't just "shove em' in" and go.

Here's a link to the right way. http://www.howardleight.com/images/pdf/0000/0065/HP500_Howard_Leight_Earplug_Instruction_Poster.pdf

I am an ENT doc and would highly advise getting the Pro Ears or comparable protection. A NRR of 22 is not enough and most cheaper phones are around that. The leights, peltors and other less expensive models use clipping technology to reduce sound where the Pro ears use digital compression, a much better technology and give 30+ dB protection. I would also advise using a pair of in the ear plugs in addition to the muffs, especially if shooting indoors or a rifle. 300 bucks may seem steep, but compared to 2800 dollars for a hearing aid as well as the permanent hearing loss you get with loud noise, it is a very small price to pay. What seems like a good deal for the money now will seem very expensive later.
