Anyone fly out of GSO or Detroit with a checked firearm?

And, I can't seem to find what is considered ok for taking ammo?

I fly with mine out of Charlotte often. I leave my ammo in the magazines and my mags in a pouch and have never had an issue. Have had to go through TSA checkpoints at many airports and never had an issue. I'll be flying out to Arizona soon and bringing it with me again. I lock the gun in one of these.

Each airline has different rules. Go to the airline sites and look up the rules. Then the TSA rules.

Also a tip put it in your luggage and your can lock your luggage without them inspecting without you.

You're only limited to 11 pounds of ammo, per TSA & airline regulations. Check Mac's Guide to Flying With a Firearm (http://glocktalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1202384) as a good read on how to do it right.

I fly with a firearm ~10 times a year. It's really not a big deal anymore. In fact, I think it's EASIER since 9/11 because the rules have been hammered home to the TSA agents.

1. Ammo in an ammo box (factory box okay, aftermarket box ok, shoe box not ok). I was hassled once over loaded magazines, and haven't done that since.
2. Gun UNloaded (of course) and locked inside a HARD sided container like the one shown above. Only you should have the key.
3. Put the hard sided container inside your checked luggage.
4. Ammo box can be in the locked container or not, doesn't matter.
5. When you check in, tell the agent, "I need to declare an unloaded firearm in my checked bag, what do you need me to do?" Then let them guide you from there.

DON"T get all jail house lawyery or puff up your chest about how you know the rules 'cause you saw their website. Kind of like arguing with a cop on the side of the road, you'll just get a hassle. Just follow along with what the agent says, each airport has a different layout for the screening. Sometimes you'll be escorted to an x-ray screening off to the side (Detroit), but usually not. Just roll with it and it'll go smooth.

That'll work! Make sure you have a non-TSA lock and you keep the key.

Yeah read that some are picky about the double lock, so picked up 2 combo locks.

After picking and plucking, my usp 9 full size fits with an extra mag. will have to keep ammo out side of the box. will prob just do a ziplock baggie with my iwb holster. As a plus, it looks like the cutout will hold my LC9LM also. So I can take my pick of what to bring.

Just to clarify...don't put loose ammo in a ziplock. The ammo needs to be in a purpose built ammo box. 90% of the time you could have it loaded in your magazines, but I did get a hassle over that once. Ended up having to "donate" 2 mags full of premium ammo to the TSA.

Yeah I read that, I meant in the box with the holster in a ziplock, keep the liquids from getting into the ammo box.
