That's pretty friggin low. I like Fox News simply because they are the only major news outlet that airs the conservative viewpoint but man sometimes I just have to scratch my head. What were they thinking? This guy went to a lot of trouble to keep his identity concealed for the safety of himself and his family, and possibly other Seals. I could see some left wing military hating media outfit doing something like this, but I have to say I'm really surprised and disappointed that Fox would stab one of our own in the back like that. I guess getting the "scoop" before anyone else is more important, huh?

Um, am I reading this wrong? FOX outed him and the DOD confirmed according to this...

At midday Thursday, Fox News identified him as Matt Bissonnette, a 36-year-old originally from Alaska, and hours later Defense Department and military officials confirmed his identity.

That's what it sounded like to me.

Apparently, folks in the SpecOps community aren't happy with this guy:

From Blackfive:
UPDATE: His name is out, but that is not important unless you are him I guess. There have been a number of misconceptions in the comments about why I think this guy is a jackass. Here is my response.
OK let me be clear. Heh.
I have not said that this guy wrote anything in the book that is inappropriate or violates OPSEC or anything else. My point is that simply writing an insiders tale of the raid is wrong, at least this soon. And it obviously makes it damn near impossible to hold the WH responsible for the numerous breaches of actual security they have committed.
As to the idea that he wrote it to clear up misconceptions, that is unnecessary. Nothing about the raid is really reflecting badly in anyone, other than the end zone dancing. It is unlikely he somehow has advance knowledge that the movie is going to paint the SEALs in a bad light (which is even more highly unlikely). So we are back to a guy deciding to tell a tale when the deal is we tell no tales. That is a blue falcon move because if one guy tells tales, why should anyone else keep quiet.

One of the SEALs from the bin Laden raid has apparently written a book about the operation.
The book, titled "No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama bin Laden," was written by a former SEAL team leader who the publisher said was "one of the first men through the door on the third floor of the terrorist leader's hideout."

He uses a pseudonym, but I know his name and it will likely come out shortly. The bottom line is that doing this makes you a douche of epic proportions. There was whining about how former operators were pointing out that leaks about classified ops were hurting our security. They were called unprofessional, which was unfair. They were not giving out info, they were saying that the giving out of info was a dangerous thing This jackass is going to spill the details of the raid so he can cash in.

Dear Loser,
Enjoy the money, you are now dead to all the rest of us.

Cordially,
(Mostly) Everyone else from the Special Ops community

And from the comments of the Blackfive article, their own active SEAL, Froggy, gives some perspective:
Everybody is very upset about this right now. I have long been opposed to Trident pimping and yet guys out there have had some interesting things to write about that probably make positive contributions to history and so forth, but lately everybody is cashing in left and right and this thing is I think going to be the last straw.I have the utmost respect for the guys at 6 and many, many friends who served or are serving there, but they are not gods. They are not above the law or the code, and this is a clear violation:
I do not advertise the nature of my work, nor seek recognition for my actions. I voluntarily accept the inherent hazards of my profession, placing the welfare and security of others before my own... Brave men have fought and died building the proud tradition and feared reputation that I am bound to uphold. In the worst of conditions, the legacy of my teammates steadies my resolve and silently guides my every deed. I will not fail.
This is an EPIC FAIL, Matt. There is absolute uniformity of opinion in NSW on this issue right now, and there are several FB groups discussing this without dissension.
This kind of shit DOES negatively impact the legacy of the Teams.
Seems like this guy has made his own bed...time to lay in it.

Big deal over nothing. If a "Muslim" type enters into this man's domain with intent he's dead just like bin Laden. Apparantly this Seal is not afraid of being ID'd.

The author would have to know that his name was going to eventually come out and that he would be PNG'ed by that community. Iirc the same thing happened when Haney wrote "Inside Delta Force"
My wife and I are friends with an ex member of the Delta force team Haney was on and your are right, Haney is not welcome at their yearly reunions.

The Seal that wrote the book has sure invited a shit storm in his life that could have been avoided.
