"I would argue that your rationalizations speak to how numb we are in this society to gun violence and murder. We've come to accept our insanity. We'd prefer to avoid seriously reflecting upon the absurdity of the prevailing notion that the second amendment somehow enhances our liberty rather than threatens it.

How many young people have to die senselessly? How many lives have to be ruined before we realize the right to bear arms doesn't protect us from a government equipped with stealth bombers, predator drones, tanks and nuclear weapons?

Our current gun culture simply ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy, and that more convenience-store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloodied and dead.

In the coming days, Belcher's actions will be analyzed through the lens of concussions and head injuries. Who knows? Maybe brain damage triggered his violent overreaction to a fight with his girlfriend. What I believe is, if he didn't possess/own a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today.

That is the message I wish Chiefs players, professional athletes and all of us would focus on Sunday and moving forward. Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embracing confrontation rather than avoiding it.

But we won't. We'll watch Sunday's game and comfort ourselves with the false belief we're incapable of the wickedness that exploded inside Jovan Belcher Saturday morning."

Once again, our society cannot assign responsibility to people for their actions, we have to blame inanimate objects.

My guess is, he'd still be dead, he just would have found another way to do it or bought an illegal gun. When a person is serious about suicide or murder, they find a way.

Exactly. Which is one of the reasons gun control lobbies' 'gun violence' numbers are so misleading. IIRC, roughly half the gun deaths in this country are suicides. To pretend that these deaths won't happen if the person cannot legally acquire a firearm is pure fantasy.

Agreed. I posted the article on Facebook earlier today and I had a buddy who was arguing the whole "well guns make it easier to commit murder/suicide" angle and I agreed...which I think shocked him a bit.
You know what they say about arguing on FB...

I tend not to get into suicide discussions among friends. My opinion is harsh. I've had family and friends that have taken their own lives. It doesn't change my opinion on the matter and my opinion comes across as offensive to some folk.

Edit...I mean real life conversations. Everyone ignores me on facebook lol. I'm invisible.

Bob Costas just quoted this article at halftime of the game tonight.

ETA-One minute too slow.

I would much rather be shot that bludgeoned to death with a claw hammer. So we should ban claw hammers.

Novel concept, how about we blamed the stupid piece of shit who shot and killed his girlfriend then himself instead of the object he decided to do it with.

Stores should start giving away phone cords, with a sign on the display that says, "why use a gun when this is free". Stupid sports commentators need to stick to what they're good at. Lying about football games

Buy his way of thinking, we need to ban motor vehicle since none of us can be trusted to not drive intoxicated, or ban bathtubs, least we're so stupid that we'd fall down and kill ourselves! What a dumbass!

I would hate to say how many angry, misguided, stupid husbands have killed their spouse/girlfriend with a butcher knife from the kitchen cabinet !!!!! He would of killed her no matter what in his frame of mind if that was his plan.
