With proper and legal smooth foot traps, you can release the foxes without much harm if your only going after Yotes. You can actually transport the fox alive to licensed Fox preserves. Trapping is a good way to get yotes, but you need to and actually have to check them daily and release anything not intended.

How the heck did he kill a cat trapping? I've caught them by accident before and released them just fine.

I'm guessing it had to be on purpose, or not checking the trap. A proper legal trap only holds them, it doesn't kill them.
