Recently, there was a thread, here:

http://carolinashootersforum.com/showthread.php?t=65752

where several of us were discussing the pros and cons of some of the pro-2nd Amendment organizations that help us protect our gun rights. Some, like me, were very positive about these groups - others objected to the constant mailings they received - one poor soul opined that "NRA is just another branch of the government. As long as they have got a large group of contributors and can pay off the right people and keep themselves wealthy...our gun rights will forever be under attack and in greater jeopardy than ever before."

Anyhow, forum member Geneinnc had what I think is a great idea:

Let me suggest something that might help us unite for the cause. It would probably take a thread from the main mod, but here goes.

Lets get 20 members to join: NRA for a year.

And several more pro gun.orgs: GRNC, etc. We can all keep careful notes and post pros & cons for the year.

It might be a great way to see who's doing what & fighting the hardest for us.

At worst, this should spread to other forums, and at least let all the Pro 2nd.orgs they are being watched & critiqued.

Ideas?
So I am offering a free one-year membership to the NRA, GOA and GRNC to three CSF members. All I ask is that you post your thoughts about your experiences as a member, and how good a job you feel that the NRA (or the GOA or GRNC, depending on which membership you get) is doing (or not doing) and how worthwhile you feel the membership is.

This is for people who are new members only - not for renewal or people with previous experience as members. However, if you have been a member of NRA, feel free to enter the drawing for the GOA or GRNC membership and vice versa.

If you want to be in the drawing for the free memberships, just reply to this thread with "NRA", "GOA", "GRNC' or "any of them", so I'll know what you are interested in. Once we have enough entries, I will use the random number generator at http://www.random.org/ to select the three winners.

Thanks in advance for participating! Thanks to Geneinnc for the idea, I hope he will post his thoughts in this thread as well.

NRA:
1. obxbronco
2. circuitspore

Random.org result = 2 - Winner: circuitspore! NRA membership active!

GRNC:
1. ScootrShootr
2. Mekender
3. morgantm
4. AndrewGWU

Random.org result = 1 - Winner: ScootrShootr! GOA and GRNC membership active!

NOTE: I screwed up and signed Scott up for a one-year GOA membership. I realized my mistake - too late - and didn't want to shortchange GRNC or Scott - so now he is a member of both!

GOA:
1. morgantm
2. lung
3. NCLivingBrit
4. MikeHoncho

Random.org result = 4 - Winner: MikeHoncho! GOA membership active!

Winners, please let me know if you have any questions or problems with your memberships. They should all be active now, and you should be receiving something via snail mail from the respective organizations within a few weeks. I did not provide your email or your telephone numbers when I signed you up, so if you want them to have that info you will need to provide it yourself.

IMPORTANT: If you do not wish to receive promotional contacts from these organizations, PLEASE contact them and let them know that!

Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all for participating.

GOA

I renewed my NRA because as much as I am sick of the begging for money they are the biggest game in town. I should renew with GRNC, but as they don't seem to do much more than forward me re-formatted NRA emails, I passed this year. Maybe GOA will be better. Appreciate the opportunity to try another group, because it wasn't in the budget otherwise!

I think I'm a current member of all 3. Shouldn't we all be,given the current congress and administration? :)

This is an interesting idea, I'm already a GRNC and NRA member. I joined GRNC a couple of years ago because I wanted to support an organization that was as pro-gun and conservative as I am. I like the fact that GRNC does not play politics or suck up to individual politicians and cut them slack.

Like many of the posts here, I also grew weary of the NRA's constant fund raising solicitations and finally had to request that they add me to their do not call list. GRNC is all volunteer so I don't get any of the solicitations you can expect from the NRA and they actually get things accomplished here in NC.

Thanks for that reminder!

Anyone who is tired of getting all the junk mail from NRA - please use the "Do Not Send Me Promotions" option and that should take care of it.

Thanks again everyone! I will post again once all the memberships are purchased...

very generous of you to follow up on my feeble indea. Just a FYI, I contacted the NRA DO NOT PREMOTE via email. They said the junk mail should stop in 4 to 6 weeks. We shall see.

NRA/GRNC

obviously, i think both have their place.
the NRA has the Big Bucks DC lawyers
(and, yes, they are really, really needed
and they are really, really expensive).
GRNC has the focus on gun rights in NC
(CCW plus reciprocity plus your CCW is
your Handgun Permit. save time+money)
without the NRA: no Heller victory.
without GRNC: no concealed carry in NC.

Thanks for your input - I am definitely a supporter of the NRA, GOA, GRNC and JFPO. I think that you're right - we'd be in far worse shape with our 2nd Amendment rights if not for these organizations.

Yes, I agree both have their place as do all the other fine organizations which are dedicated to defending the Second Amendment. I would point out that the NRA has taken, or rather been unjustly credited, with the Heller Decision and the resulting victory. This honor is undeserved. The Heller case was actually bankrolled by Robert Levy of the Cato Institute. Who in turn recruited attorney Alan Gura to litigate the case.

Initially, the NRA attempted to neutralize/sabotage the Heller Case with an unsuccessful attempt to pass congressional legislation which would have resulted in a weaken the DC gun ban. Apparently, they did not believe the Heller case had the merit to win. The NRA wanted to pick a fight they were confident they could win. Anyway, when the congressional legislation failed they pursued their own case, Parker v. DC but the court later found that Parker did not having standing. Essentially the plaintiff did not have the requirements to challenge the DC policy. Basically the NRA was headed in the right direction but picked the wrong plaintiff to file the case so they in turn filed a motion to have their case merged with the Levy/Gura Heller Case.

So a couple of key points:

The NRA had a history of opposition to the DC gun ban and tried unsuccessfully challenge it.

They then sought to neutralize the Heller Case it by passage of congressional legislation, which failed.

Their own legal challenge with the Parker case was also unsuccessful. Eventually, the NRA climbed on-board the Heller case which was successful.

As for the Heller Decision, the real Second Amendment heroes are Robert Levy and Alan Gura. If interested Alan Gura will be the keynote speaker at the Annual GRNC Dinner and Second Amendment Symposium in Charlotte on May 14.

My point is not to detract from the NRA but I feel it necessary to credit Gura and Levy with the Heller Decision. I wish LaPierre would stand up and set the record straight rather than let people assume the NRA was backing the fight from the beginning. The other point I like to make is that GRNC fights all anti-gun legislation and politicians in NC whether or not the victory is certain.

I am a member of both organizations and feel strongly, knowing what I know today, that if you are a gun owner in NC you owe it to yourself to support GRNC. This is a 100% volunteer organization with absolutely no paid administrative positions. Every dollar of every membership is devoted to defending the Second Amendment, promoting pro-gun legislation, and exposing politicians who do not share our views and values.
