what kind of budget are you in? you can get the older style handheld garmin etrex for under 100 bucks (maybe more like 50 for a new one), and it will get the job done. you can step up to the different eTrex Legends w/ color screens, downloadable maps, etc...

i have the older eTrex that works fine for army stuff and i can integrate it w/ the military datum for our maps.

I have an excellent condition Garmin eTrex (yellow cased with the globe screenprint) that I bought for the kids to use Geocaching. They didn't take to the Geocaching too much. Would you be interested it for $65?
I was going to suggest that, if that is a color one that is a smoking deal, if black and white still a really good deal.

The color one is what I have.

I also have a Etrex I've been trying to sell Brand new no box with manuals for $50,
Also have a new Garmin 60 CSx for $325 all accessories and box
That Etrex for $50 is a great deal.... I have one that I have had for many years....it does the job just fine.

About a week ago Target in Burlington had Garmin Etrex Legends with belt case and instructional DVD on sale for 77.00. (Down from 150.00).

If I didn't have one already I would have bought one. Thought about it for a minute anyway.........

No problem, I don't care if I ever sell it. It helps on fire calls to give a landing site to a helicopter but thankfully, that is not an everyday event...not until I do sell the GPS anyways. It is a great tool. A lot of technology for not much money.

I've had great service from my Garmins. eTrex Vista C, Geko, StreetPilot c330. All great and do what they are supposed to. The eTrex even kept us straight in Iraq when the BFT would crap out.

I use the little yellow garmin e trex for stomping around in the woods. It is simple to use and handy for marking your hunting spots or trail to and from. Much better than ribbons that some idiot takes down before you get back to hunt.

I also bought the Garmin CSx handheld. Got it on a special at REI some time back...$389 and that included the additional "TOPO USA" software, which normally sellls for $80 bucks.

Being an REI member, I also earn 10% reward points on the purchase that can be spent later for other items. I have been VERY happy with this GPS unit.
