I honestly do not understand why this is always a hot topic. Doe it really matter if a criminal harms or kills someone because of their race, religon or sexual preference versus harm or killing them for their money, car or any other possession.
Harming other people for any reason is wrong, so why do people feel a reason to classify it differently. Does it make them understand more? Some people are just f"ing mean,,,,, period. I honestly do not see any difference between the crazy guy in CH killing those 3 students because of their religion or over a parking space. Hes a F'ing idiot for what ever reason he had.

My problem with it is that it devalues the lives of certain people. Your child is murdered and a killer may receive life, but if my child is murdered the killer may only receive 20 years simply based on the race/religion/sexual orientation of those involved. That's wrong.

I understand that this is not what the law was meant to do, but the bottom line is that this is what it does

Hate Crime is a federal enhancement charge. Similar to how you hear possession with intent to distribute. the guy may not have any intent to distribute, but if he has more than what they consider 'personal use', and it's packaged, they add that.

Hate Crime is meant to (in my understanding from my classes in college) enhance penalties against, and deter future, criminals who target specific groups (ex ethnicity, gender, language, nationality, physical appearance, religion, sexual orientation). IT can also be used in a grouping method, IE against a hate group such as the KKK.

Does it work? it has, and hasn't. The thing in this specific case will be proving that it was an actual hate crime and just not the final straw that snapped the camel's back. This will fall on the prosecutor.

CNN headlines last night were: 3 Muslim students killed in Chapel Hill

Now, that is one step away from White man kills 3 Muslim Students in Chapel Hill.

Whats the point of adding their race to the headline....if not race baiting? I'd gotten the message if you told me 3 students killed in Chapel Hill.

To the un-intelligent, that is subliminal propaganda. It may be race related...or not... tell the facts. We do not want to hear your opinion, or what you want to propagate for your 24 hours news channel. They hung Brian Williams out to dry for lying. Someone needs to stick it to one of these news shows for their agenda. Just as bad as lying if you ask me.

Does it help you understand when you know that, earlier in his career, Eric Holder helped establish "hate crimes" at the Department of Justice?

I'm curious... can anyone document a hate crime where the perp is not white?

Just like whites are the only race capable of racism, they're the only race capable of hate as well. That is if you listen to the media.

They forgot to include these people were unarmed. Unless that only applies to when they're killed by white cops for whatever reason.

I personally believe this guy needs the death penalty and I cannot see how convicting him of a hate crime would make it any different. Maybe if it was a hate crime then they could stomp on his body after execution. Dead is dead.

And he had an arsenal of weapons, 12 guns, oh my. That will probably need to add additional charges as well. I'm just glad I don't have any guns or I might be accused of having an arsenal. Just pointy sticks for me.

Ok, here's my .02, if you're black, mexican, Chinese or muslim and a white guy happens to kill you, it's a hate crime. If a black, mexican, Chinese or muslim kills a white guy, it's not even a crime. I think ghat covers it.

I'm not a lawyer, but I think first degree murder is only punishable by death or life without parole... I don't think the Feds could kill him again if he committed a "hate crime." But they will use this to guilt everyone worried about radicalized Islam and brand them as islamophobes or racists... Just another tactic to keep people from speaking out against what is going on in the big picture...
Just another psycho lefty...

Anyone ever seen a CNN headline that says Christian killed by man in hate crime? Even a headline that says white man killed by any other race is rarely reported as a hate headliner. Even Black on Black killings are rare for national headline news.

Christians get killed by non Christians in a number of crimes, yet it doesn't fit the agenda to make the news cycle and become a headliner. Mostly because no one is going to get all riled up. The media realizes they can get more reaction out of a Muslim victim event, or other minority victim event, to make more news.

Murder is murder, race doesn't matter. Laws should apply equally.

Labeling a crime as a "hate crime" enables the federal government to prosecute a suspect accused of a crime reserved for prosecution by the state. If you have an area of the country that is racist, for example, and allows the killing of certain races by not arresting and/or convicting the accused, it was a way for the federal government to get involved and use a theoretically more impartial jury pool. But IANAL and could quite possibly be wrong.
