What is everyone using?
Really want to split with the cable and have been looking at antennas.
Been looking at some of the maps and it looks like since where we are located outside of Sanford, I am going to need to do the roof top or at least attic antenna.

Saw this one at BJs yesterday and it seems to get good reviews.

Any other tips or tricks?

Following this thread. I am not sure what is on our camper, looks like wings when it's up, but it does very well...I know it's amplified as I have to push a button inside when using it to make it work...but the picture is awesome.

Subscribed as well. We cut cable some time ago and have been using Roku for streaming Netflix and amazon prime. Would like to get a decent antenna for the LR TV at least.

I have used this Terk antenna for a couple years. I got it used on Amazon for around $50.00. It mounted right to my old direct tv mast which made installation a breeze. It has worked very well even pulling in stations clearly from the opposite direction even though it is supposed to be directional.
One tip I can give you is to remove all cable/satellite filters and splitters from your lines. For some reason they block air signals and you will not pick up any channels.

I was researching Roku again last night. Problem we have is that technology changes so fast. In other words, most tv's we have use the old RCA jacks with the main flat screen having one HDMI hookup which limits out choices. BUT...I am not in a hurry to throw out or replace a tv that works fine just for the latest, greatest if you know what I mean.

Roku working for you? I am ready for the switch, just have to convince the wife....

The Mohu Leaf Plus is the best one that I've found. Engineered and manufactured by a US based defense contractor; mine in the shop works extremely well.
This is what I use as well. Works exceptionally well for me and is velcro'ed (comes with it too) to the back of my tv so it's not even visible. Don't need all that much range in the Charlotte area to get stations though so can't say how it'll do elsewhere.

I cut cable back in January of this year, have just used our Xbox streaming with Netflix and Amazon Prime, tried Hulu + for a couple months but didn't watch any of the network shows on there and the other stuff I could get through Netflix and Amazon Prime.

We don't watch tv much, my wife even less, but I'd like to get just local cable networks like CBS, ABC, NBC and news. I had purchased an HDTV indoor antenna back in March (2 diff versions) and neither of them worked. (Bought from Target)

We are temporarily in an apartment while we look for a house so I guess I am SOL for some more time. It will be tough with football coming, guess I'll have to go to the sports bar!

With these antennas you have to run a cable wire through your dwelling right? Anyone ever use one of these things in an apartment? I see dish tv installed so I can't see why an antenna would be such an issue??

Edit:: just googled the Mohu Leaf Plus. Can someone who uses it post a picture of it? This is an indoor antenna and it works in the Charlotte area? I am interested in this little guy if it works!!!

Do you have older tv's? If so, you probably will have to have a converter box...they made "free tv" not so free a few years ago....

I just ordered a rca outdoor antennae that gets great reviews. Also ordered a tv card to go in the home theater pc i am building so i have dvr for the networks. Going to cut ties with directv as soon as it is all working. Going to use xmbc to control most of it. Will pay for itself in 6 months once i cutoff dtv.

Working great. We don't miss cable TV at all. We kept TWC internet which cut that bill from ~180 at it's peak to ~70. I pay 7.99 for Netflix and 79.99/yr for Amazon Prime. When you factor in the savings on shipping for all the stuff we buy from amazon in a year it's pretty much a wash on that.

We bought one Roku for the living room, and then a month later added the bedroom, and then at Christmas got the kids each one.

We have also slowly been converting our DVD's to digital copies on Vudu. Have about 80 switched over at a buck a piece. So between Vudu (no subscription cost), Netflix, and Amazon there is always something to watch.

And the Roku boxes we have have both HDMI and RCA output. No worries on that.

The Leaf antennas look really promising but I am just worried due to where we are located. May just try one before moving onto the outside antennas and everything.

Which model Roku do you have Tom?

We have one of the Roku 2XD and 3x Roku LT.

You can compare models and see specs at www.roku.com/roku-products.

All models up to the 2XD have AV/RCA output as well as HDMI.

Correction, we have a Roku 2HD which is the model that the 3 replaced and is no longer offered. It has the motion remote with Angry Birds game, but no headphone jack like on the 3. And I think with the 3 it is HDMI only from the spec sheet.

All the rest of them though up to the 2XD are good to go with AV output.

And with that I just ordered a Mohu leaf plus from Amazon. Will report back how it does. Should be here Mon/Tues.

I'm about 11 miles from Graham and 13 from Chapel hill. Using the site Trent posted above it looks like I may be able to get as many as 40 channels. We'll see.

the best part of having an antenna for me is the dish network salesman at sams club. they walk up and tell me they can save me money on my cable bill. i'm like oh really, you can give it to me for free, cause thats what i pay now. they get this confused look on their face until i tell them i have the good ol antenny on the house. lol

I've got a big outdoor antenna tucked in the attic with an inline amplifier. Been going strong for 4 or 5 years now. We also do Netflix with streaming and have the AV adapter for our iPad to stream from websites or use apps. The new TV we bought streams wirelessly but I think the USB antenna just tanked. Might upgrade to Apple TV here soon.

Just stuck the Mohu Ultimate Leaf up on the wall...
Pulling in 24 channels anywhere from 6 to 41 miles away.... Crystal clear... Clearer than the HDTV via Charter... One step closer to kicking cable to the curb.
