Happy to put in my 2 cents...
To start with, if you can buy better quality like SOE, HSGI, ect then by all means do so.
With that said, my budget was pretty limited:
Standard Uncle Mikes duty belt
Condor Battle belt
Condor double Kangaroo pouch (holds 2 pistol 2 rifle)
5.11 tactical drop pouch
Custom Kydex holster for my pistol
Condor shoulder harness
SW boot knife
I originally had a bag on it with a medical kit, but found it was just extra weight. I'm at PHA or the like, not dropping into a combat zone.
What I found was a battle belt, if it fits well, is extremely comfortable and is a great way to carry your gear. I added the harness to it because I am a big boy and the belt would have to be sinched real tight, so the harness lets me put the weight more on my shoulders.
I have probably $140 -$150 all together in the rig, and although I like it, you can do better.
HSGI sells a really nice double rifle pouch and double pistol pouch drop leg that has room for either a third pistol mag or a multi tool. If I had the money back I would go this route. Seems well made, holds all you need, and attaches to your regular belt.
A note on Condor: I have yet to see any major quality problems with it. I have no issues with using it and like what I have. I also have a SOE mini chest rig so I can compare the quality, and there is no comparison. However, SOE is bomb proof...Condor is more fat boy weekend warrior proof. So totally different worlds.
In short: pay the extra money, for the HSGI rig if all you are going to do is run a class. It will last longer, be more comfortable, and do all you need it to do. If, however, you think you will want to mount other things on a battle belt as a "big out" option then, well, get the belt.
