In honor of my brother from another mother. I hope to get some updates from Booger or other members, that recently put together a battle belt. What worked or didn't work? I took the plunge, and I'm planning to put something together for a carbine and pistol class.

Happy to put in my 2 cents...

To start with, if you can buy better quality like SOE, HSGI, ect then by all means do so.

With that said, my budget was pretty limited:

Standard Uncle Mikes duty belt
Condor Battle belt
Condor double Kangaroo pouch (holds 2 pistol 2 rifle)
5.11 tactical drop pouch
Custom Kydex holster for my pistol
Condor shoulder harness
SW boot knife

I originally had a bag on it with a medical kit, but found it was just extra weight. I'm at PHA or the like, not dropping into a combat zone.

What I found was a battle belt, if it fits well, is extremely comfortable and is a great way to carry your gear. I added the harness to it because I am a big boy and the belt would have to be sinched real tight, so the harness lets me put the weight more on my shoulders.

I have probably $140 -$150 all together in the rig, and although I like it, you can do better.

HSGI sells a really nice double rifle pouch and double pistol pouch drop leg that has room for either a third pistol mag or a multi tool. If I had the money back I would go this route. Seems well made, holds all you need, and attaches to your regular belt.

A note on Condor: I have yet to see any major quality problems with it. I have no issues with using it and like what I have. I also have a SOE mini chest rig so I can compare the quality, and there is no comparison. However, SOE is bomb proof...Condor is more fat boy weekend warrior proof. So totally different worlds.

In short: pay the extra money, for the HSGI rig if all you are going to do is run a class. It will last longer, be more comfortable, and do all you need it to do. If, however, you think you will want to mount other things on a battle belt as a "big out" option then, well, get the belt.

Some pics:
Left side (weak side) double kangaroo with two AR and 2 Glock 19 mags

Right side (Strong side). Glock 19 holster, knife (because it's tacticool and all the cool kids have them) and a hook for ear pro.

Harness: I took a cheap pistol mag holder that came on a condor belt and attached it to the harness just to add a quick third mag. The back of the harness has a small Molle panel that's pretty nice, could be used for a hydration pack, FAK, or a bag or burgers.

All in all, it's functional, it fits well, and it didn't cost me a small fortune. I have no illusions that it would last prolonged heavy use in a combat zone...but at the same time, it may.

All I have to input is think in layers. I have a need for a PC with plates. So all my equipment stacks up to full kit and down sizes to range use.

But when at full kit mode I carry it all at the same time.

Asa example: my PC has plates, IFAK, comm's and equipment for team use. My mags and stuff stay with the HSGI drop leg.

That same drop leg is what I use in training for reloads.

In short: the above belt I would not replace the use of it on a PC or drop leg. These items would (add) more new gear, not more of the same gear

Thanks Booger. I like the setup, and I have no visions of playing GI Bro. I have a few items and I ordered a Condor Battle Belt.

Do you know the total weight of your belt?

Condor battle belt, maxpedition dump pouch, Tactical Tailor split MAV. Pouches on it by somebody. Can't remember brand. Fairly cheap. Kydex holster and mag pouches on belt by me.

Right side, SR9 with TLR1. Mollelok holster and knife sheath. Made the knife too....lol

Left side double PMAG pouch with SR9 mag in front and Surefire P6 Defender in back.

I used one of the mag pouches that came on the condor inner belt right in front for a second spare pistol mag parallel to the belt.

I went the same way Boog went. I too needed a set of suspenders. One mistake I made was to get the 3 AR/pistol mag pouches. I didn't need THAT much ammo at any matches. If I was running with a team, I'd need more ammo (and it would go on my heavy vest) , but as was already mentioned, we aren't going to war. One thing I have added was a dump pouch. I find I use it more while just shooting at the range and classes. Its nice to throw extra mags, ammo, etc in. Those Condor mag holders work well, but you have to muss with the retention. The nice HSGI stuff has a better style of retention, but at a cost.

OT a bit, but I rigged this Spectre chest rig up for my wife as a SHTF solution since she never wears a belt. 3 AR mags a crossdraw SR9c holster with two spare mags on the other.

Holster secured by a teklok in this case.

The Condor Belt seems popular. I was concerned about the fit, comfort, and durability.

I had a Blackhawk one before the Condor. Condor is head and shoulders above Blackhawk. I'm sure HSGI is head and shoulders above Condor I just ain't got the $ to find out. Well, I do, I'm just cheap.....

As far as weight I can't even guess...with a pistol, 2 rifle mags, three pistol mags, ect, probably 10 lbs maybe?

To add on to what Boyette said, this rig is actually a part of my "bigger picture" rig, where I have a micro chest rig that holds 4 AR mags, 1 pistol mag, and a blow out kit. I had more "stuff" on the belt but didn't need it for what I was doing. Even so, if I put it all on I have 6 AR mags, 4 pistol mags, and first aid stuff. Not a bad load for the size.

In the future I may add a PC, or more robust vest like MuShu posted, but I have to spend money a bit sparingly at present.

As far as Condor quality goes, it isn't bad. It gets a bad rap for being made in China, but it's honestly not terrible. No, it isn't SOE or HSGI, but it's a great value for the price...it's like Primary Arms vs Aimpoint.

Anybody using a canteen?

I have one, but not attached. Got a cheap surplus one. I got it in case I ever wanted to swap out mag holders for pouches to make it part of a light hiking rig. But at the competitions I shoot it is just added bulk and weight.

Now, if you have it as part of a SHTF rig, then put everything on it you think you may need and then get used to carrying it.

The benefit of molle gear is that you can customize it however you like. Heck, at one point I had a shotgun shell pouch (thanks RR), a FA kit, an admin pouch, an extra single rifle mag pouch, and who knows what else. But after actually using it I realized how much was just added crap I didn't need.

To add: a great benefit of the battle belt is that you can easily put on and take everything off. No unthreading holsters or pouches from you belt while trying to keep your pants up. Just strap it on, shoot, pop it off.

Thanks for the feedback fellows.

Booger, I owe you for convincing me to get the Condor belt because it is put together nicely. I received a few items today (Safariland holster/G19, Voodoo mag pouch, Condor Belt, and Voodoo misc/first aid pouch).

Thanks. I wasn't sure if my vz2008 30rd mags (banana curve) would fit. My brother is using the Voodoo mag pouches for his AK, and I went with those.

Soooooooo, to complicate the living shit out of this thread....because that's my goal :)....

  • If one already was good to go on a belt
  • If one was good to go on holsters
  • If one was good to go on pistol mag pouches
  • If one had no need for alternative pouches or comms equipment
One would be better served by the HSGI drop leg rig. All I need is somewhere to stuff AR mags and my 32" waist doesn't afford a ton of real estate. It seems to me after thinking this through, I'd be best served to run normal gear on my belt and drag out the HSGI rig when the rifle is in use. Is there room for a third taco on the HSGI thigh rig? Or should I just be content with 2 mags? We're talking range use and possibly a class when the weather is warm.

The HSGI rig is what it is. You cannot add or take away from it. You can, however, but their plain drop leg platform and then buy tacos seperate. So if I were in your shoes that is what I would do. The condor drop leg didn't work for me as it has only one connection point to your belt so it didn't seem as stable as the HSGI style that I've seen others wear.

You are right, for double stacks they are nice and snug, but for single stacks they have to be loaded 2 to a pouch. The plus side is they have flaps you can use to secure the single still remaining.

Condor is good for what it is.
