hickok45: Springfield XDs Recall Follow-up

I haven't been on XD Talk in a while. Now that people have had the recalled guns back for several weeks or more, are they reporting that the triggers are lightening up and smoothing out with lots of dryfire? Getting back to pre-recall trigger pull weights (for those who measured pull weight before shipping the gun back)?

I still don't see how people could unintentionally rack the slide or control the gun through recoil without depressing the grip safety. There just isn't enough grip for your hand if you drop the webbing between your thumb and index finger below the grip safety. I get that Tyrion Lannister would want his gun updated, but I think for most folks this is a non-issue.

If anyone wants to make an offer for an original, unmolested-by-recall XDS 9, holler at me! ;) I keed I keed. Well, sorta.

I like how at the end he said they couldn't have possibly made the xds 45 trigger any worse, I only own a xds 9mm that I am probably not going to send for recall and it has a very nice trigger. Does the 45 not have the same nice trigger?

Yeah, I really like my pre-recall XDS 9 and would rather not risk them making the trigger worse to fix a problem that I don't think is an issue for most people.

From what I've seen at XD Talk, the pre-recall 45 trigger isn't quite as good as the pre-recall 9mm trigger (though hickok may have gotten an exceptionally bad one). If you remember, the 45 was released a year before the 9mm, so perhaps they refined the trigger in that time?

What I took away from all of this; after having watched it twice, is that what Hicok45 was saying is the consensus amongst the XDs owners is that the revised triggers were different but seemed to get better with shooting, or at least would start moving back to the quality they exhibited (good or bad) prior to the recall fix.

With regard to his own pistols, I understood him to say that his 45 has always had a really crappy trigger and that in his mind the fix from Springfield couldn't possibly make it any worse. My take is his 45's trigger is no better or worse than it was before the recall fix. He seemed a bit ambivalent about the quality, post revision, of the 9mm trigger.

I sent my XD-S .45 in about 4 weeks ago. After reading mostly positive comments on the XD forum I decided to go ahead and get it done. There is a trigger upgrade available but I think I'll wait to see how mine feels once returned. I was very satisfied with the trigger pull. Good travel and weight for my EDC weapon.

A different take than hickok on the post-recall trigger. Plus, this video demonstrates the issue that sparked the recall. He only shows it via manual slide rack, but the same issue can arise if you fire the gun without depressing the grip safety. So same issue, but two different manifestations:
1. slam fire on chambering the first round
2. doublefire (or triplefire or more) if the user manages to hold the gun through recoil without depressing the grip safety

here's the thing: if they replaced ANY of the mating surfaces of a trigger with new components, sure it's going to be different and possibly 'gritty'. That's just how metal objects work. You can break them in with dry-fire, and if you are really a stickler, you can put some valve-lapping compound between the mating surfaces and then dry fire. That will smooth up a trigger really nicely.

Starting at 3:38 in the video, he goes over the issue. I was playing around with my pre-recall XDS today and my trigger won't reset without depressing the grip safety, and unlike the XDS in the video, mine is very consistent about it. But if I grip the pistol properly, the trigger resets every time. Racking the slide on such a small gripped gun without depressing the grip safety is awkward, to say the least. Even if I barely depress the grip safety - but not enough that the trigger could be fired - the trigger still resets every time I work the slide.

All this is MHO:
Springfield triggers are decent from the factory. My wife loved her XDs9 before we sent it back and still likes it after the recall repair was done. The trigger is a little heavier, but I expect will return to the original weight with some break-in time. She likes the long, (relatively) heavy pull, while I prefer short and light, so I installed the PRP Ultimate Match kit in my EDC XD9SC. Perfect - for me. YMMV

I'm wondering if that's the difference for me. I shoot my SC much better than my XDs

Could very well be. Although the twp guns are nearly identical in height and length, the thickness is very different. I prefer the thicker double stack for my big hands while my life likes the thinner single stack.

Just received my email notice that my XD-S is on its way back. Should have it tomorow or Friday. Turn-around time was under 45 days. I'll post up my first impressions upon its return.
