Holster Wear

There has been much debate on this topic the last few years. The fact is both kydex and leather will wear a guns finish. The consensus is that kydex will wear at the retention/contact areas and once the gun wears the edges off in those areas the wear stops unless the holster is dirty. Unlike leather, kydex doesn't maintain full contact with the firearm so any finish wear will be limited to just the contact areas and only during break in. Leather on the other hand maintains full contact with the firearm for its primary retention. That leather attracts and holds moisture, oils, sand, grit, and powder. Even though it may feel soft the abrasives are present and those abrasives will consistently wear the metal even after the finish is gone. Guns carried daily in leather have a distinct look to their finish seat especially if their blued....or used to be. I personally think guns with leather wear have a lot of character.

I make a habit of periodocally rinsing/wiping out the inside of my kydex holsters because those same abrasives collect on the inside of them as well but the big difference is that they can be easily cleaned out unlike leather where they get embedded in the leather.

Holster wear is cool as it was defending the owner, just like hunting rifles that have scratches from the field getting food. They show character.

Do not confuse the above with knucklehead dings and scratches.

I like the fit and feel of my kydex IWB but nothing looks better than a custom leather holster. I am also not concerned with holster wear. I buy things to use, not look at. If it's a safe queen, that's a different story. But for an everyday gun, I'm not concerned with wear either from kydex or leather.

Holster wear (from leather since I won't own a plastic holster or gun) is the mark of a working gun. A piece that is carried daily and depended upon will eventually begin to show it's age. I don't consider it an issue.

Holster wear adds character. Especially on blued finishes.

Holster wear, handling marks, barrel marks or barrel hood wear are all similar in that I'm a little ashamed for anyone to see it if it looks all factory fresh with no wear. :)

The thin plastic strip worn smooth on my g19 trigger guard from constant kydex draws and reholsters...we'll it just didn't look as cool. :).

What about the n82 holster would that fall under nylon?
Their design is actually pretty easy on the finish as long as you keep the plastic part clean. Their holster design I'm not a fan of though. I know they're quite popular to folks who feel they're comfy but most of people who use them haven't spent much time actually drawing/reholstering with them. Took an advanced concealed carry last year and the two guys I who had them tossed them out mid day.

I like the original version with the elastic strap. You can draw quickly and easily without the little twist that is required when using one their Pro versions. As for holstering I don't care about doing it fast. In fact I think its a dangerous practice. If god forbid I ever needed to actually draw my firearm in a self defense situation the last thing I'd need to do is rapidly put it back in it's holster. I'd have much bigger things to be concerning myself with at that moment I would imagine.

Back to the topic at hand I too like a gun that has holster wear. Adds character and charm. My kydex holsters have imparted wear as described above. A bit at the retention points and thats about all I can find.

Yep, one of the guys had the older elastic version. His gun fell out of it a couple times. The other guy drew his holster with his guns couple times. Amazing what happens when you the pace picks up and stress is induced.
Being able to holster your gun with one hand and not removing the holster has its merits when it comes time to out it away. During the class those with collapsing holsters really struggled during the part in class where the instructor explained what to do after the shooting.

I've never had one come off but i could easily imagine it happening. My favorite overall holster is the crossbreed style. It's what I use most often now. These style holsters also create a hybrid wear on my guns. The leather side is creating one type and the kydex another. Neither is severe however.

Why no more soft lining in holsters? Last one I was able to find was a leather Safariland 758 for my EDC G23.
They don't make the 758 anymore.
About impossible to find a holster with soft lining anymore. Back in the day it was standard and it worked.

From my understanding, lots of the softer linings attract moisture, and bits of dirt. Starts off good, then gets worse...

I can see that...would not be a good choice for an OWB riding the ATV out in the woods.
Definitely an application for everything I suppose.
But the most mine has ever seen is a little bit of sweater fuzz. I love it.

Yep, lint is and issue with iwb or pocket with soft holsters.

As far as holster wear, I honestly can't hardly notice any with a stainless slide and my hybrid kydex. I do notice some with glocks and xd's with the hybrid, but not a lot. No More than leather. Like wahoo pointed out, it seems to get to a certain point and doesn't get any worse, unless you get a painted on surplus finish like on cz82's and the old 75's, then the finish just keeps chipping away LOL

Good post, Wahoo95

I have a Galco summer comfort leather holster. It turns the leather inside out compared to a normal holster and that really accelerates wear. It's also ridiculously comfortable to me for some reason.
Funny how everyone is different, as I never thought the summer comfort was that comfortable with a g23, compared to other options. I ended up selling it to a member for 20 some dollars.

I was going to post something similar to this. I've only got a couple spots of wear from the Kydex side of the holster on my Glock 19 and non symmetrical wear on the leather side after carrying the holster for a little over a year. I imagine in a few years a couple spots will be near-shiny from drawing and reholstering.

I use an Alexap crossbreed holster and love it. As Wahoo mentioned, IWB holsters, and a big reason I ditched the Galco summer comfort leather holsters I used; reholstering frequently took a second hand if only for a moment.

Honestly I'm surprised myself. It should be horribly uncomfortable. Especially at 3 o'clock. Especially in jeans and a t shirt. Especially with a colt rail gun. Yet here it is on my hip. I don't get it, but it works.

I line all my kydex hybrids because it works & I seal the leather inside as well. Well that and drawing & reholstering isn't heard by everyone around. Same reasons some of the larger makers line there more expensive lines.

I just recently ordered a leather iwb holster with shark accents and shark skin mouth reinforcement from Wilson combat. It was the first I've found in a while with a nice lining. Not sure exactly what it is but it reminds me of a soft brushed suede. I haven't had it long enough to see how it will wear on the finish, but it is certainly a well made high quality holster. On a side note, this is my first with shark skin and it much stronger than I expected. I think I may end up with others with shark skin around the mouth.
