Last year I shot the "Sgt. Alvin York Memorial Shoot" and won a .48 Caliber barrel. My dad has been hard at work turning it into a "chunk gun" for me. Think of a "chunk gun" as the black powder equivalent of a bench rest rifle.
This one is 72.5" long and will weigh ~30 pounds when finished. He started with a hunk of cherry and a pile of parts. The Siler flint lock was purchased, everything else fabricated by himself or friends. The stock was roughed in with a band saw from a piece of maple and then hand carved from there. It's a work in process still with the final touches put on the stock and all the metal needing browning.
The tube that rides on top of the barrel is a sight shader, not a scope as some ask. It serves to remove the glare and gives a great sight picture. The rear sight is simple notch but is adjustable forward/aft for eye relief. I'll file the front sight to match whatever load ends up working best at 60 yards, the traditional chunk gun match distance.
