Home made artillery...AKA "Chunk Gun". VERY Picture Heavy!

Last year I shot the "Sgt. Alvin York Memorial Shoot" and won a .48 Caliber barrel. My dad has been hard at work turning it into a "chunk gun" for me. Think of a "chunk gun" as the black powder equivalent of a bench rest rifle.

This one is 72.5" long and will weigh ~30 pounds when finished. He started with a hunk of cherry and a pile of parts. The Siler flint lock was purchased, everything else fabricated by himself or friends. The stock was roughed in with a band saw from a piece of maple and then hand carved from there. It's a work in process still with the final touches put on the stock and all the metal needing browning.

The tube that rides on top of the barrel is a sight shader, not a scope as some ask. It serves to remove the glare and gives a great sight picture. The rear sight is simple notch but is adjustable forward/aft for eye relief. I'll file the front sight to match whatever load ends up working best at 60 yards, the traditional chunk gun match distance.

That looks Awesome Tim! I hope to see that in person when it's complete, what a unique creation. One of these days, when my schedule works, I'll come check out the Asheville rifle and pistol club when you do an invitation again. The last two times I've been out of town. Your Dad is quite a craftsman! Let him know we all love seeing his hours of labor take shape.

You could change your name to Burt Gummer. I know who I'm calling when giant underground worms start showing up.

What's a "false muzzle seater"?
I probably phrased it wrong but what I was thinking of is the bullet seater that uses a centered hole to align the bullet while a tool presses the bullet into the rifling at the muzzle. The seater was center by dowels fitted into the barrel's muzzle face that interfaced with the seater. Here's pictures of a false muzzle seater; http://www.pbase.com/halp/hartfordpope

I've been at my dad's in MI this week and picked up the finished rifle.

For reference, I'm a tad over 6'4"
