I would think a vmax would suffice. I'm planning to answer that question myself this year. Never deer hunted with an AR either. I've got 60gr vmax already loaded up so ima try that. I think for our thin skinned deer a .223 is plenty to put one down. Of course, so is a 17HMR, but I'm not supposed to know that.
