In one of the shops they had souvenir key chains with a bullet* - supposed to be Barney's one bullet, I guess. The only problem was, every one was a 9mm, and I'm pretty sure ole Barn carried a .38 Special revolver. So instead, I bought myself a genuine Ernest T. Bass throwin' rock, for only $12.95 . (No, I didn't.)

*Ok, they were cartridges, but Barney called 'em bullets.

I have to admit that I love Mt. Airy. Not necessarily the Mayberry side of things, but just the fact that it's still a nice smallish town with a real downtown. Also has relatively cheap property in outlying areas. I'm hoping to move up that way if I can find the right spot.

I have to agree, one of the downtowns that have most of the buildings occupied.

If someone's into the Andy Griffith thing, it's about as good as you're gonna get for an Andy Griffith vacation. My 80 year old grandad has seen every episode and can recite nearly every line of every show. He was in hog heaven when I took him up there. We even splurged for the ride in one of the sheriff cars with a Goober look-a-like as the driver. The pictures made a great photobook later on.

If your standard is Disneyland or Gatlinburg or the like, then yes, Mt. Airy will put you to sleep. If you're an Andy Griffith fan, well, it's your only option!

Been in and around Mount Airy for all my life. Not much going on here, but I like that. Pretty quite town most of the time. While I absolutely love living here, I do wonder why people visit. I think the fact that we have the largest open face granite quarry in the world is more interesting than the Andy bit. Several good fun shops within a short drive of here as well.

I was born and raised there, but it ain't the little town it used to be when I was a kid, but it still beats the heck out of living in the metro areas like Gboro & WS for those how can make a living there. I moved away after I was grown, because there just wasn't much available to make ends meet there for me. Seems like now days everything is geared toward drawing Mayberry tourists into the area to generate income for the town. I guess they got to do what they got to do. I have always missed the music, rural areas and mountains around there and VA though. It is tough to make a living anywhere these days, but it has always seemed a little harder up there to me. If income were not a problem, I'd move back to the area.

The wife and I try to get there at least once a year. We stay at the Hampton Inn so we can take a dip. The mexican restaurant across from the Microtel has great eats, so does the snappy lunch. We usually take the bike and hit the BRP or the round about way to Pilot Mountain, and at night take in some music at the playhouse. I'm sure Mt. Airy has it's share of troubles, but for us tourists, we see a nice town.
