Just "cleared" my house...

Pulled into the neighborhood to find Sheriff's setting up a perimeter around my block. Neighbor 3 houses down had come home and interrupted a burglary. Guy knocked the neighbor down and took off.

Well, I never lock my door. So, there was a chance he could have let himself in my place to hide out. Deputy offered to clear the house for me, I foolishly declined (hindsight) and did it myself. The incident had happened 20 mins before I got home, so I figured he was long gone. It was only when I was 1/2 through the house that dawned on me he really could have holed up in my place waiting for the cops to leave.

Anyway, I had my light and j frame EDC when I went through the door. Immediately grabbed the .45 from its hidey hole and went though the rest of the house. All the time speaking in a clear stern voice, "If you're in my house, I am armed. Get the F out and I won't shoot you!".

All is well, no intruder in my place.

So...I did 3 things wrong...

1. Need to start locking the doors
2. Didn't take up the deputies offer to sweep
3. Announced my intentions

Sheriff is still outside, waiting on K9.

I'm kind of surprised that my heart rate never jumped and I was not nervous at all.

I hope you didn't forget the attic and crawl space...If you did, I hope you let the deputy check them for you...Yes, it's easy to get caught up in the moment and forget about the end result as to what could happen, but always best to let the paid guys do it or let their K-9 take the bite out of someone. Glad it turned out well for you.

Yay! More fun with crystal meth.

Sorry to hear this. I thought I left all this kind of crap in Charlotte.

I was wrong.

Dang brother! Hate to hear that happened in your neighborhood. Looked to be plenty safe to me with the one way in one way out thing.
What does your place back up to...I never noticed.
Now (as we learned after our incident) prepare to wake up several times during the night. We haven't had a full night's sleep since our vehicles got gone thru.

Yeah Pisgah...I live in Fountain Trace, neighborhood off of Hebron/Willow just East of Cummins. Not exactly the inner city.

The petty theft/burglary thing is everywhere. The tweakers don't care where it is so long as they can get something they can use to get a fix. I'm in the city near to where the little theater used to be. We've had lots of issues with folks breaking into cars and now they are stealing gasoline. The local constabulary have come by asking me if any of the stuff was mine. I've offered to fix the problem for them if they would guarantee me that they would look the other way. No go on that. Bummer since that has the potential to be good practice.

I'll make sure I give a shout out next time I'm pedaling past your place. That little downhill from the cemetery is the last bit of gravitational reprieve until I top out at Jones Gap. Finley Cove makes it all worthwhile.

BTW, I'm working all day Saturday and Sunday so no Fun Show for me. Y'all enjoy.

Hmmm...interesting, I got blasted the time I had to do it...man, I never got so many arm chair quarterbacks in my life. Glad you are ok, glad it was nothing...told you it was unlike anything you ever imagined...was I right?

Anyway...glad everything is fine....next time, let the tax dollars do it.....

well, we JUST had a break in at 930 this morning other side of the subdivision. Amazingly, Greensboro caught em. Lucky for them they didn't hit our street, bunch o neighbors would not have let it go that way...

Actually, I am shocked at how calm I was, and still am. When going I've gone over situations in my head (before this) I always expected to be amped up and/or scared. I'm not claiming any kind of macho BS, just describing how I felt. Once I figured out that there really was a chance that he may have been in the house it was mor of a "huh, well I guess this is probably stupid." but no adrenalin rush.

Tim- have you checked your underwear yet?

Glad you are OK man. I live in one of those really, really safe neighborhoods too. Just a matter of time......

We all know you cleared the house yourself so that Johnny Law couldn't accidently discover any old evidence from an old boating accident...

That's just because we love you JT. :-B
Glad it worked out for you Tim. Next time let the Deputies and the K9 do the job for you, they do that sort of thing everyday, and if something happened to you who'd harass Snal?!

I'm glad to see you didn't have any problems....But.

So...I did 3 things wrong...

1. Need to start locking the doors
Yep big mistake. This aint the 20's IMO ya lock all doors and windows regardless where you are these days

2. Didn't take up the deputies offer to sweep
I would have let the deputies do the sweep It's their job.

3. Announced my intentions
I don't see anything wrong with this in fact the last course I took it was taught to do that.

You mean the time you chose to do it? Seems like some pretty good advice was being offered in that thread; especially, iirc, the part about hunkering down in a room and waiting for the police if you think there's an actual intruder in your home.
