Just think how bad a REAL disaster will be... (NYC "starving" within 2 days of storm)

Watching this news coverage just reinforces with me even more how truly BAD things will/could get if had a severe disaster hit.

This storm moved like 15 mph for DAYS towards the coast. It hit where they predicted. People were warned, evacuated, threatened, etc, etc. And still, after only 2 days of not being abler tot get to the grocery store: "STARVATION" ?!?!?

And this isnt just coming from some wackjob/wino they found wandering the street- there's MAYORS of towns echoing this plee!

Wow.

With a weeks warning- shit got bad within 2 days.

Imagine ZERO warning and a week-long blackout? Id just about write-off large urban areas completely.

Society now expects instant gratification (power restored, gas stations and ATM's working, store shelves restocked, etc.) immediately following a natural disaster. Obviously the folks up north have never experienced anything like Sandy before. No excuse for being unprepared with all of the advanced warning they had. Most people from the cities are far less self sufficient that those from the country. I will never understand that mindset but I also choose not to live in a large metropolitan area.
A dollar says they will be no more prepared the next time. Any takers?
I think most people live in cities so they dont have to worry about not having conveniences at their fingertips.

Well it its not like they ever go thru nort easters, ice storms or blizzards.

This can not possibly be the first of any sort of natural disaster that they have experinced.
A case of MRE's in the closet? I guess that's only something a crazy prepper would do.
There is very little excuse for being ill-prepared. If you look at just this instance, determine the items that they seem to need the most and there is no reason that you cannot have them on hand at all times.

Flashlights (w/plenty of batteries), cash (because credit cards aren't working), fuel (keep your cars full and an extra gallon or two), a siphon (to get that gas out of your car and into your generator if needed), self-defense tools (because the cops ain't coming when someone else is trying to take your supplies),..... heck, you all know. I guess we don't all think alike though.

I think the problem is that a flood is much worse than those. Even if you have stuff ready, it can be destroyed or carried away by the flood waters.

This is a situation that I have not planned for, the loss of my home and all my supplies. I am watching and learning for the future. I need some large ammo cans to fill with supplies and put someplace else, I guess???

It's amazing how fast the trouble is starting up there in NY/NJ. I just read on Drudge Report that they are now throwing eggs at the line men that are trying to get the power back on. That's just not right!

Looks like Big "O" is doing a bang up job managing this one....

If you have stuff stashed in your car already you can just take off before the storm. It's the whole bug out concept. You don't need a bug out vehicle or a "cache", but a trunk full of basics would go a long way. In my trunk I have a bug out bag, a get home bag, MREs, clothes, and camping type stuff, and things I would need at a hotel. I don't know how possible that would be for larger families to do something like that.
thats what i did last year for the hurricane. packed up the truck and camper and headed inland. much easier to leave before it gets really shitty.

Not I.

Sides that, why be concerned with prepping when there are more critical issues to ponder, like who's going to win the top spot on X-Factor or who's playing in the big game next week.
You could do something similar to a safe bolted to your foundation. If you get a Pelican case or other high intensity/resistant case you could bolt it just like you would a gun safe. Course foundation also means low water level, so...
I was on the phone with my very liberal Dad in CT We got on the topic of people who were so unprepared despite plenty of warnings. I told him about a guy in the news who was complaining that all "THEY" gave him was a thin sandwich. This less then a day after the storm and he could not provide food for himself. He showed up in just a thin sweatshirt despite cold temperatures. His apartment was not flooded, just without power. My Dad responded that "THEY" should be ashamed that they only gave him a small sandwich and the "THEY" should be doing more. He was not kidding either. I told him it would be really nice if he went to Hoboken with his grill and make everyone a steak dinner and that the "THEY" people will be glad to give out sandwiches to people who appreciate their effort. He better bring the A1 sauce too so the people he feeds won't bitch about not having to eat a steak without it.

We, the people who actually attempt to be prepared are the "THEY" people and I am sick and tired of people who make no effort to be prepared for anything themselves. These people take away the resources from the people who really do need the help.

Liberalism is an affliction that can't be cured.

Not true. You and I have spoken; you may have gotten a sense of my views. I used to be a liberal (to some extent anyway). I am slowly curing some of my relatives. It takes time because the indoctrination has taken place over many years.

Sucker bet...
I read somewhere that an average grocery store only contains about 3 days worth of food. I heard another story about roads and bridges that NYC only has one day. Each day the supplies are depleted and each night they are restocked.

The trouble with an EMP type event is that is no THEY to come to the rescue. Unless you count China.
