This is for the SC folks.

Dont know to much about WMA land anymore. I dont know anyone with private property anymore. Id like to take my son deer hunting. He just turned 7, I may not let him shoot this year but Id like to take him for the experience. Anyone have any info on ZONE 2 that they would share? I'll pretty much go any where in the state if you know of a better place.

Enoree Ranger District
The Enoree Ranger District consists of more than 170,000 acres located in Newberry, Union, Chester, Laurens and Fairfield counties. Even though the Enoree Ranger District is a consolidation of the Enoree District and the Tyger District, for now there are still two separate offices -- the Enoree in Whitmire and the Tyger in Union, only 18 miles apart. Both offices are located on Highway 176 approximately 50 miles and 70 miles, respectively, northwest of Columbia, the state capital. However, the Enoree Ranger District expects to be housed in one central office in the next three or four years. The Enoree Ranger District has many active programs including a growing recreation program, soil and water improvement, wildlife and fisheries program, timber management and prescribed burning.

The Enoree District and its diverse resources provide a full range of active outdoor recreation activities. These include hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, canoeing, photography, scenic viewing, etc. The area is home to hot summers but really mild winters so you can get out year round. Overall, think southern with southern hospitality and really friendly folks!

I hunt out of the Collins Creek Hunt Camp near whitmire every year. As long as you forego opening weekend, theres not a big crowd. I take my daughter with me all the time, but not during peek times....too many folks. Lots of good squirrel hunting along with deer.

Check out this web site. A lot of members hunt WMAs and there is a lot of good information traded back and forth.

just got back from walking some WMA and what little land we have around the Lancaster, Chester, York areas seems to be very thick and nothing but pines nothing to help the deer stay in the area which is probably why we have it and not a hunting club. I have been to the places at Lansford canal and it is thick and you have to be careful especially taking a child out some idiots on WMA shoots at anything that moves, which might explain why they are not in a club some place, but no matter where you hunt i am willing to bet alot more ppl will be out on state land this year due to hunt club dues being so high. all the land down down on 97 has been cut and they are still in there loggingnot many places to hunt there, lots of land just hard to hunt 3000 acres of nothing, they cut everything down.

Thanks for the info, I have been looking at maps 4 and 5. There is plenty of WMA there. Im going to google earth and see if I can find some access rds or decent areas to look for when I head out to scout some areas.

Looks like I may be ground hunting when I take my boy.

Make sure you are wearing an orange hat AND vest...like sgtsundevil said, there will be alot of people on game land this year. Unfortunately, there are hunting accidents each year...
so, just take some precautions. Personally, you couldn't make me hunt on WMA lands...I've been a member of at least one or two clubs a year here in SC for the past 21 years. Good luck, happy hunting and be safe.

This is starting to refresh my memory on why I stopped hunting WMA. I'll tough through it this year and see how it goes. This deer shoots back. :36:
Im going to start asking around to see if I may can find some private property to take little man out. Im not looking to hunt all season. If He could just see a doe walking by he would be happy.

i think a few of us should try to get together and form a club and start looking for next year there is alot of land to lease in the area just have not wanted to start something new this late in season. 350 each ten people 3500.00 gives us enough to find something and start planning to keep it long term get in good with home owner etc etc, so we never have to worry about our kids hunting on crazy wma land, we just gave up or club in kershaw county because we could not get enough members and it was loaded with pines.

Let me know if you get a club together...I'm always looking for new places to hunt, even though I'm a member in 2 hunt clubs already. You can never have too many options..!!
Get in touch w/ Plum Creek - they have 10s of thousands of acres to lease & with the economy in the tank right now...they are having trouble getting their land leased up.

I am serious about this, we can form a club find the land we want and not have to pay all the high dues of everyone else's clubs, I am talking a good family oriented club both my daughters love to hunt(15,10) and wma just scares me sometimes. develop the land and stands in a way that maximizes the deer growth and lets us all get meat in our freezer, a decent manged club and not one with ridiculous rules, i would like to have dues around 350 a yr, with the year going from may 1st to april 30th, i can make an excel spreadsheet and get everyones info if you all are serious. i would think the 350 would cover everything , 300 for club dues and 50 for seeds, insurance, and such depending on what is needed. the main question is how many do we have and how much land do we need. mr rawls there is a club here in lancaster seeking members 350.00 675 acres i hunt there on occassions with family members it has everything pines oaks pasture creek etc etc, just contact butchn here on this forum for details

I'd be interested as well. Everyone I knew with their own property has either died and it got sold off, or it was just sold for development.

I don't really even want to deer hunt, just a field to shoot some doves over would work for me!
