If you want to plink and you want to get in with your 1st AR, I suggest checking out the M&P Sport @ Lawman's. It's only $549 and sports the same furniture w/o the forward assist and dust cover, both things you can easily do without. If you find you want them later yu can get a new stripped upper for well under $100 and move all the other parts to it.

Also, you can't mount a .308 upper on an AR-15 lower. That's an AR-10 and requires the appropriate lower.

If your looking for a good lefty AR, go with STAG Arms.

Thanks!

I don't need to have a lefty AR as I've always shot right handed and I'm use to it. As long as the brass doesn't hit me in the face I'm fine (hints the concern about the brass deflector) I would like to have a great foundation because I will take it part, mod it, learn it etc. I've been eyeballing the one in the link above, but just don't know much about them. Example being for 100 I could get a chromoly barrel, steel heavy barrel, etc. I rather spend a little more and get something better than get something less, then replacing it. Only to cost me more money.

I'm willing to spend up to 1,000 give or take a hundred.

IMHO, spend a little extra for the better barrel, everything else can be upgraded later and easier to get. The barrel is the most important component of any rifle.

Thanks!

I was using the 100 extra as a example not actual figure.

from worst to best material for barrel
Steel
Chromoly (assuming this means chromoly lined)
Bull/heavy barrel SS or SS with chromoly lined?

SS would be the best choice. Depending on what you will be doing with the rifle you may not need to spend the extra $$ on a bull barrel. Nothing wrong with a good chrome lined barrel either.

You may want to look at YHM (Yankee Hill) they make great AR's at decent prices.

Thanks again. Just need to find some place that has these in stock somewhere. Can't really find any S&W with chromoly barrels.

What about spending the extra for piston system like SIG?

I went to the gun show and saw some pretty sweet AR's...I shouldn't have gone..damn it!

Almost bought a M1 grande and a Socom. 2 of my favorite rifles.

I've been very happy with my Daniel Defense. I have the DDM4 and I definitely recommend a flat top upper. I was pleased with the iron sights on my rifle. They are stout to say the least. They'll knock a mans teeth out without losing a bit of zero. The DDM4 is right in your price range. Before I bought the rifle I was ready to spend close to 2k for a top of the line AR. I drove 2hrs to see the Noveske models and the next weekend I drove another hour to see the LWRC and LMT's. After looking over all these rifles I didn't think they were worth the extra money. I have the exact model pictured below. I am thinking about getting a 24 inch upper one day to see if I can eek out some long range accuracy. My DDM4 using the irons will hit a torso sized target from a benchrest at three hundred yards all day. I wish I could do that off hand but I'm not that good. The range where I shoot limits me to 300 yards but I'm sure the DDM4 will reach out way further. As a side note I have a buddy who can sit indian style and hit that 300yrd target with my rifle. I can't. The one brand I'm not impressed with in my limited experience is the DPMS. A friend has one and it's just seems loose? compared with my Daniel Defense and it is not as accurate with the M855.

My rifle came with rail covers and two 30 rd magazines. It also came with a roll up cleaning rod.

EDIT: Make sure you get a 5.56 chamber. The S&W's I looked at were all 223 if I recall. 5.56 is really important IMO.

Carolina Gunrunners has a few nice DD and LMT AR's on the shelf so you should go by and check em out. The new DD V7 is really nice.

Another thing to think about is making sure you budget for ammo, mags, sling, etc. since those things can add up quickly. DSGArms has a very nice deal on a (10) pack of D&H GI mags with teflon finish and Magpul followers for $85.

Chromemoly and Stainless Steel are two common types of steel used to make barrels. Chrome lining is can be added to a Chromemoly barrel to extend barrel life and add some corrosion resistance.

Looking at the gun specs it will say barrel material, chromemoly but doesn't say if it is lined or not. How would one go about knowing if it is or isn't. Also is there a way to tell you go to the gun store and the guy behind the counter doesn't know?

Not sure what's wrong with your google.....the Colt 6920 is their standard 16" AR. Its the same as the US issued Colt M4 with the exception of being semi auto only and having a 16" barrel rather than 14.5". Not sure if they are still in stock, but G&R Tactical, DSGArms, and The Gun Rack in the Kernersville had them for <$1k.

Rifles made by DD, Colt, LMT, Spikes, PSA(most), Noveske, will have MPI/HP Tested chrome lined 4150 barrels unless they are Stainless steel. The M&P's are chrome lined as well except for the Sport model which uses a Nitride/Melonite coated barrel with 5R rifling.....this is still a good barrel. Stick to brands of known quality and you don't have to worry about being sold the wrong thing or not trusting the dealer knows what they are talking about. This also gets you an AR that's built to the proper spec from the proper materials....no sense in paying the same money for a rifle made from parts of an unknown origin which have undergone no testing. And aren't assembled properly.

Thanks Wahoo for all the great help. how much would I save if I built something like/almost exactly like the colt6920

also not to sound stupid but what makes the 6920 the deal to get?
