This happened just up the road from my old home.

Some of the details that make it fascinating:
- The man arrested had "approximately 20 guns" and "thousands of rounds of ammunition".
- He had "camouflage clothing, knives, bulletproof vests, helmets, and several pairs of handcuffs, stockpiles of medicine and nonperishable foods."
- "An illegal indoor shooting range was also found in the attic, police said."
- He had no criminal record and his license to carry was revoked after police took his cache.
Leaving aside the handcuffs and whatever kinky things he planned to do with them
, the rest of his stuff in total seems, if not typical for the average person, at least not completely atypical. The number of guns he had was certainly not excessive by most C&R and gun collector's standards, and anyone who owns .22s might easily have "thousands of rounds."
He had a carry permit, and considering Massachusetts gun laws, he undoubtedly had to acquire his weapons through an FFL and most likely register them.
The story doesn't explain why police came in the first place, so it may be that he did something illegal somewhere else, prompting police to get a search warrant. My guess is the thing that caused him problems was the shooting range in his attic. Someone heard him shooting in there, called in the cops, and voila, he's lost his permit, guns, and is now portrayed as a nut (which he might be, given his comments about an impending Armageddon).
Regardless, I'm pleased as punch my wife talked me into moving back home to NC a few years ago.
