I just got a call from a cop in Winston Salem who wanted to know if I would like to trade an almost new Marlin with two stocks for my 30-30.

Can you say "Hell Yeah!"??

With this swap, I am down to 5 calibers. No more lame ducks, oddballs or even mouse gun calibers.

Everything I have will fire .45, .357, .22, 5.56 or 12ga.

I'll post pictures when I get it home tomorrow.

Choat used to make a side folding stock, at least for the 9mm Camp Gun.
Yep... that's the stock on it now and he has the original wood stock as well.

I know I am going to have to check the buffer (deterioration), the trigger housing (plastic, cracks) and the stock (cracks from improperly tightened action), but is there anything else I need to check?

Replace the buffer if it has not been replaced, I got one that had not been shot in years. It fired 21 times and the the buffer exploded, It took 20+mins to get all the little pieces out of the trigger group.

Blackjack bufffers makes a replacement.

I hear that on the 45 models, they really benefit from a heavier spring. Blackjacks also sells a 21# spring so I am going to order that as well... assuming everything goes right tomorrow.

You also need to replace the recoil spring, it's the other major culprit for the cracked stocks.
Wolff sells a 16 and a 21# (factory is 11...) 200gr target loads are fine with the 16#, for hot/230gr loads go with the 21#.
Remember that the micro-groove barrel does not like lead. I have however shot some plated stuff and it was fine.
When shooting at 75 or 100 yards you can pull the trigger then lift up your head and watch the bullet leisurely head down range, loads o' fun...

Hmmm... I think I've seen that gun before...

Glad it found a good home...My 11 year old Son said I made a good trade for the 1965 Winchester 94!!

Thanks
Cool! Nice meeting you today!

The only downside so far is that ALL of my 1911 magazines have a rounded cutout at the rear of the feed lip and won't work with this rifle.

Time to go shopping!

Update, for those who have one of these.

I just took the Marlin apart, determined to see what it was about the square mags that made the difference. I disassembled a MecGar I had and shined a light up through the empty mag body so I could watch every millimeter of the insertion.

Turns out that the reviews that specified the square backed mags were wrong, it is NOT about the square mags.

There is a small, spring-loaded lever in the magwell. The Marlin mag is ever so slightly beveled on the rear edge and it allows the magazine to depress that lever and slide past.

Standard mags are not beveled and have sharp edges. A small diamond file to smooth the rear edge and make a very shallow bevel on a spot about 2/3 of the distance across (left to right) and voila... the mag works perfectly.

The best part is that since it is such a minor, almost insignificant mod, it won't even weaken the mag or make them specific to the Marlin.

Got my new buffer and spring in today...

First I gotta say that the stock buffer was in great shape, still had flex, not chewed up at all. replace it with the new one and stored it away...

The new spring is freak STRONG. I have heard that the stock spring is 9# or 10# and I believe it... the rifle was really easy to work the action. The new Wolf 21# spring makes that thing a bear to pull back unless the butt of the stock is anchored. I might go ahead and order a 19# if I have any issues.

Now I just gotta shoot it!

I have been playing with the idea of making this a scout rifle....

I found this pistol scope attachment to be perfect for mounting the 1-7 Illum. Ret pistol scope I had in the safe.

Kinda fugly, but it will allow me to use the iron sights for close up.

not sure if I will keep it like this, but I gotta try it first, see how she shoots.

That looks fragile as hell. And you're right, it is fugly. Why not just get a quick-release mount for the scope?
It is a pistol scope and I can't mount it far enough forward to get the right eye relief.

I know, I know, get a rifle scope!

I've spent too much this month... any more, I will be sleeping on the couch. A real scope will have to wait until later.

How about a nice ghost ring sight? Will this be a defense rifle?
I still don't know.... I thought at first it might fill a home defense role, then I thought about a coyote gun....

I don't see me ever using it past 50 yards so I may just go back to the red dot I had on it to begin with.

It's not like I need to do anything with it at all, but anal-retentive in me seems to be trying to force it into a role... :)
