Well last Wednesday was the trifecta of messed up days. Dealing with estate proceedings, nursing a nasty summer sinus infection and probable bronchitis. I am heading down Patton Avenue and some goober is pulled halfway into the right lane out of the Goodwill store. I am travelling the speed limit in left lane and cars behind me and beside me. Guy in right lane beside me has to slam brakes to avoid T boning idiot pulling out(more like parked) in right lane. He is attempting to cross four lanes of trffic and proceed westbound. as I pass him I notice he is not even looking west HE IS LOOKING EAST! Just in time for him to slam the accelerator to the floor. I feel the impact and immediately apply brakes and proceed into Northern Tool entrance as there is no traffic coming from the east. Turn in and back out west bound in right lane and look at turdhead heading up hill past DMV at a rather brisk pace, and my brain says, WTF?
I hit the gas and catch him up at the light for Lowes. I am busy trying to dial 911, read his plate, and honk my horn. By the time I remembered I wasn't pressing send we are getting on 40 east bound at exit 44. He makes like h is getting on 26 and swerves across 4 lanes to catch the 240 exit. I am now convinced he is trying to shake me. e gets on 240 and when we get to Amboy exit he dives into the exit at the last minute. Thankfully there are other cars ahead of him that slow him down. I wave my cellphone out the window to let him know he can't outrun a cellphone, maybe now he knows I have given his tag nmber to the police. If he had started running again I was done running him cause he was obviously crazy.
He pulls into the skate park(used to be the Asheville Speedway). He parks his truck and I approach at an angle that allows me egress if he should pull a gun. I keep about 75 feet between us and roll my window down after he exits the vehicle and doesn't seem to be a threat. I asked him didn't he know he hit me up on Patton(about 4 miles away) "No you hit me" really "Then why did you run?"
"I was looking a place to pull over."
I told him to save it for the police, they would be here in a minute.
Ashville PD arrived. I was leaning against my truck. He asked me for license and registration. I gave him my info. He went and interviewed the idiot. I can't imagine what he told the cop. Cop looks at my damage, which is what is so sad about this story. It was minor. I will need a new bumper but pretty sure the small mark on the paint will buff out.
When the cop was done with his paperwork he gave me back my info and said,"You are a CCW holder." I didn't even think about it. As many times as I have been through a checkpoint and it was the first thing out of my wallet. I apologized profusely and told him I was pretty keyed up and didn't think about it cause I didn't have my pistol with me(which I didn't). I have no idea why I didn't grab it when I left the house. He didn't get torqued up about it and I assured him it wouldn't happen again.
A few questions:
In an obvious hit and run, why didn't this guy get a search of his vehicle.
If I don't run him down and try and get him to stop, what are the chances he does this again and what are the chances he never faces any charges.
What are the possible charges?
Did I do the right thing?
